I keep typing ‘Lethal Weapon’ and having to correct myself!

Gripping episode. We’d obviously missed a couple of minutes in which Robin phoned Cormoran before he reached Jasper Chizzle’s house. But then we had quite a lot of other stuff to get in, mainly with Robin. Yeah, Cormoran got dumped at work, but she left her husband. He interrogated Amir, but she went undercover (again) and got chased for it.

A couple of things suffered from the compression of the adaptation, I think. Cormoran remembering ‘Jimmy Knight’s girlfriend speaks Polish’ did seem like a more handy coincidence than ‘I know it’s a long shot…’ could cover, and also Robin remembering ‘Blanc y Blanc’ and her happening to have gone to the same posh hotel as Kinvara had.

More striking is how important the mobile phone is to her, comunication device, but recording gadget and camera in one.

So, they got hired by Izzy to prove her father hadn’t killed himself – Izzy who seemed pitiful, fighting for the memory of a man who hadn’t loved her, among her awful family, smaller than her investigators in stature. We met the whole adult Chizzle family and they were ghastly together, with Rafe feeling vicious about Robin having been Venetia

Robin’s disguise of the episode was more appreciated by the men in her life. Apparently her take on the Goth look rang some bells. Some nice echoes in Flick and Jimmy’s bad relationship and Robin’s bad marriage. Of course paranoid Jimmy got someone to Google her (Googling! While muttering aboud the ‘deep state’!) Precautions that had been taken kicked in, and shewas smart in doubling back on herself and that move that tripped him up, but it was still primal.

Meanwhile, there I was wondering what part of Wales the actress playing Della came from – there was one line reading that sounded Irish, though she settled down, and it was nice to hear ‘Geraint’ pronounced properly. With her divorcing her husband for what he’d been up to, Lorelai finally having enough of debasing herself so that Cormoran could use her, and Matthew’s infidelity FINALLY making Robin walk away, it was an episode of break-ips

Matthew was awful 90 per cent of the time, like his reason for wanting to be with Robin was possessive and vacuous, his version of ‘fighting for them’ was so wrong-headed, as if he expected all the brownie points for breaking up with Sarah. Robin finally stopped being soft about him – she forgot to mention that his mother’s death and the pity that had awoken in her was another part of why she hadn’t dumped him long since. IIRC the conversation with the taxi driver was lifted from the book and worked well.

More of a sense of the city, from Cormoran shadowing Amir to Robin heading for the shop. The plot thickened, but that feels secondary because I know whodunit and more or less what they did.
