What struck me was how Robin-centric this all was – hit me more perhaps because it was all in one episode rather than the last stretch of the book. All the trying to be a good little soldier as her marriage ended (everyone’s response to the news ought to be a sign that that’s major and she’s allowed to deal with it) plus real threats leading to major panic attacks. Hearing her pained gasps for air was…ouch.
Never let a PI use your toilet if you have affairs to hide!
The return of the lying, manipulator Charlotte, trading on old feelings and his good nature made Cormoran sad (understatement), and seeing him go with her made Robin sad, plus the whole marriage break-up, and they were sad together in companionable, if frustrating silence. I thought the music was nicely sympathetic on the Cormoran/Robin front throughout.
And the bonus of a flashy TV set is that I could rewind after the blink and you’ll miss it accidental kiss on the lips, though guh, the brush of knuckles gainst lips afterwards. Just enough Matthew’s gone things have shifted between us towards the end.
Before that, of course Cormoran was matter of fact and helpful over the panic attacks once he witnessed ne and was nearly in a car crash. It struck me that by drawing the parallels between his leg, he was reflecting how Robin’s always been about his diability. And reassuring, and in fact right. There are times when his training still makes him the senior detective, but in terms of unearthing information and making connections, she’s a natural. Though as per usual, he was the one to make the connection that solved the case.
But although he pushed himself into the boathouse – whatever they did with the angles emphasising Stike’s bulk in that moment, and having removed the bullets, Robin, despite her state, played for time brilliantly.
I really liked the scene between Izzy and Billy for the human connection. Izzy is no less of a snob, but she and Billy recognised each other’s brokenness.
