BSG 1.6 Act of Contrition
A weird mix of confusion because of the flashbacks within flashbacks or whatever it was (because if it was from Kara’s POV, there were too many scenes that she wasn’t witness to) and trust that it would bcome clear when and where Kara was losing control of her Viper and what planet’s atmosphere she was falling in, and although it was a thrilling escape from certain death to a higher chance of survival than none was also fortuitous as it was in a planetary atmosphere supported life. I’m guessing it was where they were getting water from.
On the character front, Kara was utterly charming - her and Lee mucking about like kids, part of the relief of celebrating something after such dire times, and then the sudden horrible deaths by accident. And the realisation that they’d lost another scarce resource: trained fihter pilots.
We then got exploration of what happened with Zach and the impact of his death on Kara and Kara, and Adama forging a would-have-been-your-father-in-law relationship in the aftermath (while Lee was absent) on the basis of omissions and assumptions. And Adama’s last words to her then being a repudiation of his daughter figure.
Even though I could technically have watched the next episode immediately after, I didn’t (I had obligations that night) and luxuriated in fellow feeling for the first people to see ‘TO BE CONTINED’ appear on screen.
Because the Galactica doesn’t know wher Kara is, and the fact that some Cylons found the fleet, which clearly still hasn’t watered up and is now even weaker defensively, is not promising. Plus if she’s gone to the planet where there was water, that was in the form of ice, so what kind of conditions will she land in?
I thought they handled the slip between feelings and the professional responsibility beautifully, interestingly, with Lee as well as Kara, obviously, and Adama, and my optmisitc ‘Well, you won’t make the same mistake of passing anyone you shouldn’t’
melted in front of Kara’s inability to risk the ‘nuggets’ the first time around. Hotdog following her when he wasn’t ready, wasn’t quite good enough, was spot on.
Otherwise, a moment for Tyrol, the difficulties of cancer treatment, which doesn’t seem that far advanced from what we have, for Roslin (and a great character in the doctor), goodness knows what Not!Six was up toon Caprica other than giving Tricia Helfer something to do even if it was only wafting around artily. Oh, and the repeating funerals, with their similarities to, well, specifically Christian American armed forces funerals as seen on TV and film for me, was food for thought and emotional enough. I mean, Caroline Adama (I presume) was wearing a hat (artfully so that they can recast if they want to bring her in as a character, in flashback or whatever.)
Ghosts 2.3 Redding Weddy
The director clearly enjoyed the shot going around the Captain as a ghost in the present to him alive and in the past, using it twice.
What I found funniest was Kitty and Mary being delighted at playing Hide and Seek, which was simple and silly and oddly touching because of what we knew about people using Hide and Seek as a way of avoiding Kitty, and Mary almost reaching the point of being ready to talk about her witch trial/death, except for circumstances retraumatising her. There was a lot of pathos in the mix here, with the ghosts’ boredom with each other’s stories (another way of re-emphasising how important Alison is for them). I also enjoyed the whole thing about Robin (and others) learning man had gone to the moon/Moonah, and then him getting sucled into conspiracy theories on YouTube, and that’s not even getting into the Captain’s repressed angst (I am proud of myself for still worrying if he was literally talking about explosives buried in the garden) and Pat and his Top Gun love, and how that all worked into the whole. It was all just really tight and entertaining, even a little moving.
Though continuity wise, how did Humphrey’s head return from the roof from last time, and how will he return again? Is his head ending up on the roof going to be one of the running gags this season?
Oh, and there was a passing reference to lockdown during the war.
