[personal profile] shallowness
What was going on with BBC One’s schedule last night? Anyway, Strictly is back, with a sense of how much its audience needs it – seriously, the beauty of the opening sequence, where they’d filmed by the sea at the golden hour, and the tension of all the dancers dancing apart until finally they weren’t and then returned to the studio… Well, it made me sigh with happiness and I can’t be te only one. (Also, every time Strictly references the Red Curtain trilogy, I feel joy.)

The judges alluded to it – they also took Quality Street as their wardrobe inspiration, although Claudia looked like she had turned up in the most luxe pyjamas. I like the seating arrangements for judges (reduced Bruno this year) and couples, seeing as the audience is reduced.

Fair play, they gave us lots of info about how it all worked. I just feel sorry for whoever is responsible for ensuring everyone sticks to the rules, especially if the shows are going to be mostly live. I thought everyone was touchy-feely - in an understandable everyone-has-been-keeping-their-distance way, although that may be the impression left by the pros reuniting for the group dance bubble and the three first couples to be revealed. Starting with the Globe theatre, some of the choices were obviously the Strctly production team phoning up places that sadly can’t be open and promising lavish footage for their use, though I think a few couples can be miffed at their location.

As for the partnerships: I think my current favourites are Oti and Bill and I hope he can stay longer than his throwaway arms promise because they made me giggle with glee. Katya and Amy get the biggest choreographic challenges. Based on the big group dance, the babies look promising, while Caroline’s oft- mentioned ballet lessons and acting skills made her look better than most of the older competitors, but I’ve learned not to judge by the opening routine. The important thing was that Jamie didn’t get injured. Despite the very different settings, it was nice to see ye olde nerves, naivete about what lies ahead, bluster and willingness to go along with it. Though Tess’s comment about guessing who the last male/female pro would be actually confused me, because although I never expected Nancy to get a partner, Nadiya, Neil and Grazziano could have. (What’s happened with AJ? He was never my favourite, but I thought he was popular.)

Oh, and the ‘If You Ain’t Got that Swing’ number was tremendous, with Nadiya in the eye-catching dress and all. So, despite sad little bits, like Kelvin and Oti only bein able to do a truncated lap of honour routine, Aliaz and Janette living apart while JJ is living apart from his young kids, and Claudia reaching out and saying she missed not standing by Tes, I think the feeling has to be gladness that it’s back and hoping it’s as fabulous as possible. Which is has to be said the lighting team took very seriously.
