shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Shrew)
[personal profile] shallowness
I was watching this as the news started filtering through about the explosions in Boston. I don't believe that anyone from there is on my friends list, but I hope that all of you and yours are safe and well.

Revenge 2.13 Union

First half was zzz even despite the return of flashbacks to David and older moppet!Amanda and her Jack – might as well make the most of him before he gets too old for the part.

I don’t think Declan and Charlotte should procreate now (indeed, never is fine).

As I don’t care about Aiden and Colleen, unlike Emily, I was all ‘GO’ as the fog crept in over the graveyard. I wonder if it was machine generated or happenstance.

And now to the ‘location, location, location’ and general stupidity part of the episode:

I suppose I’m glad Nolan has a heart, but given all the surveillance he’s done, talking like that to Padma in the office was stupid. See also Victoria blabbing to Daniel in his office. Stupid. But the stupidest thing was Emily’s password. SERIOUSLY!? AS IF. Could the show try not to make characters stupid in unlikely ways to move the plot forward?

Amanda just put a whopping big target on her back by her crude, but effective attempt to blackmail Conrad. That was also stupid and Emily will no doubt call her on it when she finds out, but I believe she was emotional enough not to be thinking beyond getting Conrad to accept the cheque. Is someone bugging Conrad’s office? I forget. I think the show has forgotten too. If they have something up on a wall in the writers’ room, I bet they don’t look at it.

The moppet “wedding” was excruciating, and I say that as someone who ships Emily/Jack if anyone, but just as I was feeling for Emily watching Jack marry Fauxmanda for real in the present and wishing Nolan could at least put his arm around her, we cut to Aiden. I gave an exhausted sigh, which not even Nolan’s typically awful jacket had drawn out of me.

Conrad did better with the location and wording of his conversation with the thoroughly rascally Ryan. But Victoria did the best of all to achieve her aims. Silly Helen, yes Victoria would murder you if you threatened Daniel. Haven’t you been paying attention? Daniel and Conrad’s responses while Victoria was all cool about what she’d done was hilarious.

I am handwaving that Emily was sitting by the fire at a part of the beach that is nowhere near her beach house or the Graysons.

I did worry about Carl, but only mildly, because the show is a wuss.

2.14 Sacrifice

I took some twisted satisfaction that for this ep, there was a click to confirm that you are an adult thingy given what a certain character did at the end of the last episode.

What struck me, watching this ep straight after the last, was that this must have aired after several weeks’ break, given all the expositioning that was going on. Best part of the beginning was Victoria’s continued cool at having killed Helen and having to deal with the situation. While IRL, I no way most of the behaviour of the characters on Revenge, if you’re going to do something like this in a TV drama, do it with aplomb.

Oh good grief, show, if you’re going to try to fake us out – which is always going to be a feeble attempt, given the track record – don’t show me that Nate Ryan has a ring on his finger.

If there’s a heatwave on, why is Nolan wearing a woollenish vest? (In hindsight, Labor Day doesn’t translate as the end of summer to me, which I suppose was the point they were making, although this summer in the Hamptons hasn’t played as being as significant as last summer, somehow.)

Aww Amanda for telling (part of) the truth to save and protect Jack. Their fake/true fight was excellent – much higher stakes than Victoria and Daniel’s fake fight for the Initiative’s benefit and many more layers. And then she chose to sent him away to live while she took on Ryan and suddenly the sinking of ‘the Amanda’ that we saw was symbolic. Nate deserved all he was going to get for not tying her up. I even made up a song called ‘Shoulda tied her up, coulda tied her up’. Not available for download any time ever.

I enjoyed Conrad and Victoria’s little exchange at the party where he was all amused, rebuffed and twisted love and she was pure vitriol. But excellent though she is in a crisis, he’s better at long-term strategy.

Burn Gorman is great casting as a shadowy representative of the shadowy conspiracy. May he have many more stare-offs with Madeline Stowe.

Ooh, we had a second of Emily-Nolan-Jack time together.

Blinder of an ending – what a way to write Amanda out. Not the bit with the necklace, but everything else.

And then without barely a breath, to the next episode. 2.15 Retribution

Oh dear, more trauma for Emily. And motivation.

Who made Aiden the boss of Nolan?

I don’t say this often, but I was impressed that Daniel grasped that without the laptop, they were barely better off. I was also impressed that Ashley realised that Conrad had been setting up his alibi, but much less impressed by her top knot.

Oh, Nolan is life’s pawn. Okay.

Meanwhile ugh, of course Aiden is the one who hugged Emily. And of course she’s the one who had to tell Jack about Amanda.

Oh, where this is taking Jack is interesting - I like the glimpses of darkness we’ve seen from Weschler, and what he now thinks he knows about Amanda and Emily re-establishes things, plus he’s gunning for Conrad. Meanwhile, I don’t think Emily will be able to act through Victoria’s children to get at her finally. On the one hand, innocent Charlotte meant well and brought danger to Emily – but if she burned down the foster home when she was a teenager, she’ll be able to find something to handle it now - on the other, Daniel is neck deep, and Nolan abdicated responsibility for choosing between the needs of the many and her father to Padma, who should have plenty of clothes in that colour in her wardrobe.
