Nashville 1.12 I’ve Been Down that Road Before
In which stuff they’ve been teasing us with since the pilot starts to happen.

Awkwardness between Rayna and Deacon, partly responsible for his being a grumpy bear. I thought that Juliette’s almost immediate response to his criticism was a bit much – the idea of the tour was that they tweaked the show before going big, so she’d have some control. And it’s not like it’s all or nothing, stick in a couple of the less flashy songs in the middle for contrast (and the flashy stuff? Not that impressive for an arena tour.)

Better build-up for Rayna’s label! It was a nice follow-through from last week and didn’t bring her totally down after seeming to be on a high. I like that she’s taking control of her career, they’re finally returning to her having an interest in Scarlett and Gunnar, and the echo with young!Rayna and Deacon. And it was good to know this was coming while Scarlett worried about her rent and Gunnar got suddenly irked with his housemates. Oh, how I wondered what was coming next there.

I didn’t expect Scarlett to get a spinectomy, though! I was so glad that she had decided to call Avery on the debt and then when he behaved pathetically, call him on that. And he was wrapped up in his little bubble that he didn’t see from her tone of refusal about the releases that she wasn’t going to play along with the fantasy in his head.

But the transplanted or regrown spine was still intact as she asked Gunnar to move in. OH KIDS, I have a ‘ship that used to be called the Roomies, so I’m delighted, amused and grandmotherly at the potential for Roomies 2.0. They didn’t even mention that it might be awkward because of that time they kissed and all the unresolved feelings...

But if the point was about introducing a real, stripped down Juliette (Deacon’s face when he realised she was taking his advice was a picture) they should have considered all the artifice. As if the lighting crew and band would be able to pick up their cues quite so well for a song that the show seemed to imply had been finished that afternoon. But the show went for the Dramah and it showed interesting stuff about Deacon’s influence on her.

Ouch for Rayna, though. Does Wadi (if that’s his name) know that he may be her father? Still, fantasy label!

Teddy and Peggy whatevered. As they had done in the past. Whatever.

For the show, though, that justified Deacon kissing Rayna in the elevator. Third time’s the charm and all. I liked that as something that was entirely built up within this episode (although you just knew there were memories of other elevators and other tours.) And everyone talking at them about their relationship...

And Gunnar moves in and has a conversation about plausible deniability with Scarlett. Heh. Then Avery comes a-callin’ and says he was a jerk and the world AND SCARLETT says yes. And then he sees Gunnar and is crude and the punch-up that I’ve been expecting since forever happens, and Scarlett did stand up for herself a little and probably hadn’t been expecting the punch-up (because she’s in denial and forgot the time Gunnar hauled that guy off and maybe subconsciously enjoyed it.) OH, KIDS!

I thought it would have been nice if Rayna could have given Juliette a boost about what she did, but hey, she was busy brooding over elevator kissing. And it was nice that it was the Assistant (maybe I’ll have to figure out what her name is). I think she may have earned herself a spot as the chief bridesmaid at Juliette’s next wedding.

But Teddy turning up genuinely was great (after a nigh-on perfect song lyric for Rayna and Deacon) – ‘a moment of clarity’ indeed! And we shared Rayna’s shock, Deacon’s disappointment and were getting ready to boo and hiss at Teddy, but...his words were a nice shock. This was possibly the thing that worked the best in this whole episode. She wasn’t going to offer him more than a hug and a peck on the cheek, not after what he’d done. So spinectomies all round! (Teddy, Avery, Scarlett, maybe even Juliette and her growth speech, although like I said, although I believe she’s impetuous and Deacon has too much influence over her, that was contrived.)

And from the little post-fight scene, Scarlett did enjoy it.

I tried watching The Politician’s Husband, but eh, decided to watch HIG(more)NFY - please don’t ask Ray Winstone back.

And then there was The Mindy Project – the Thanksgiving episode.

I was amused (and freaked out by the fire and the mouse at the clinic), but I did think it was a little too frenetic – perhaps there were too many strands. I didn’t remember that Mindy’d dated this week’s Hugh Grant lookalike before, there wasn’t enough Morgan, Danny’s solo Thanksgiving was a nice contrast with everyone else and maybe we could have done with more culture clashing at Betsey Bear’s house. I think they’ve decided Jeremy/Betsey is going to be a thing. Well, okay then.
