Penultimate Brooklyn Nine Nine

Penultimate double-bill! I felt a little pressured to watch this as a double-bill when the final episodes and a special were airing. But it’s taken me ages to post this.
8.6
I appreciated the two plotlines, the A (Boyle) plot was so weird and a nice adaptation of Knives Out and murder mysteries in that context. At the same time, I was thinking, ‘Has Jake learned anything?’ as his insistence murder had been done led to stealing Boyle’s sense of self. But I guess he saved it, and it was all so absurd, the Boyles’ interactions, their love of rodents, the grandmother sourdough being both callback and Arthurian riff…
Meanwhile, the ladies were involved in Holt’s love life. I think my actual favourite bit was Amy and Rosa commentating as Holt on Hot!Todd’s failures, but also that was a good deployment of Scully and Rosa’s love of Nancy Meyers.
8.7
The reaffirmation of the vows is one thing, but Holt deciding to retire felt …a bit excessive, and emphasised that this really is the end of the show. Jake still hadn’t learned anything, wanting his one last cool case with Holt to be like a movie, while Holt’s decision to go along with it showed he wasn’t ready to retire, which Kevin (I dug him pretending to be a cop) could see, thank goodness. In the midst of all Jake’s immaturity (srsly Amy, if you haven’t already got a separate bank account, GET ONE after the well-deserved promotion), I thought they developed the parallels between the two marriages well.
I also enjoyed the Rosa vs. Cheddar – I was expecting Cheddar to lead them to the basement to save Holt, and they developed O’Sullivan’s home life and weaknesses well. The visual of Terry actually picking up a stunned Amy twice was delightful.
I watched most of Goodbye Brooklyn Nine Nine, until it started revealing what would be in the final double-bill. I might go back to the rest of it after seeing the final eps for myself. I’m not sure if it was made specifically for E4 or if they used interviews with the actors and creators and clips, and added British talking heads, one of whom was Nish Kumar, who looks a bit like Pimmento. In fairness, he did seem to be a fan of the show. They did a good job of giving props to characters and the show’s touchstones, and I was reminded that it shared DNA with Parks and Recreation.
