9 become 8!
Just saying, you don’t have to wait until Remembrance Sunday to do a nice ballroom pro group routine. Gents in tails and the ladies in poppy-red gowns. Somewhat inevitable tribute to the Queen.
The recap separated the couples into three groups: getting 39-37 got you into the top one, so it included Molly and Carlos; 32 or 31 got you into the middle, and this was when I realised properly that Ellie T, Tyler and Kym had all got 31 and so were tied and all were in more trouble than I’d thought. Ellie had had a redemption Charleston that suited her, Tyler had had a powerful paso that was better than last week, and a 6 from Craig, and Kym’s emotions had got in the way of a higher score. Tony and Katya were, quite rightly, in the bottom group. Hamza seems to have several mothers: Jowita met his birth mother, and he was dancing for mother Nature on ‘Saturday’, but was now talking about ‘Mother Africa’.
First to be called safe: Molly and Carlos, and I went ‘oh yeah,’ having forgotten they were in the dance-off last week, but had had, in the judges’ eyes, a rise back to the top. Then Kym, who because they’d talked about a mistake, was probably the 31er I’d been most expecting to be in the dance off. Then Fleur, which was fair enough. But Tyler was not safe. It all rather depended on who he’d face. In the Clauditorium, we learned, were the Dance-Off gang.
‘Zack and Sheku’ (it was jazzy-soul-pop, so the latter was dropping the surname, I guess) were performing, and it was a shame that the dancers weren’t on for the bits where the singing was quietest, but Nikita and Amy (in a very fetching dress) danced every second they were on the floor, and did a lift when the lyric was about feet on the ground. Heh.
Judges (all in black) came up, and mostly repeated what they’d said on the live show. As for Mostsi’s point about ‘people’ maybe not connecting with Hamza’s African-inspired dance, I await the day a couple gives us morris dancing in their couples’ choice, babe. Can you imagine? Some soap star/sportsperson/presenter pleading, ‘but I want to do it for my dead dad/grandpa/village/Albion’ and the pro looking up videos on their phone and mumbling ‘maybe we could have a fan instead of handkerchiefs.’ And Jason Gilkis going ‘No’.
(Is morris dancing the one with handkerchiefs?)
Sadly, they asked Shirley, not Craig, to talk about Fleur’s samba. Instead he had to explain his 6 for Tyler. It sounded like he was slightly regretting it to me.
Second lot: Hamza was called safe, then Will, then Helen, all of which was fair enough, then the last two couples had to wait and we had the most delayed reaction from Ellie T and Johannes, who needed Tess to tell them explicitly they were safe, and Tony and Katya weren’t.
I celebrated.
Ellie and Johannes explained that they had been confused, and Ellie was very droll about being jealous of anyone who dances with Johannes now. Heh. Helen and Will had a ‘northern off.’ So, Ellie, Helen, Will and Hamza have never been in danger, for what that’s worth on a night when two newbs were in danger.
We then got a trail for Strictly returns to Blackpool, with the remaining pros trying to explain to their partners and us how special it was. I kept thinking ‘yeah, but, Vito/Carlos/Jowita haven’t experienced Strictly at Blackpool’ even if they get its importance to ballroom dancing.
And then we had an unexpected spanner. Due to an injury (according to ITT that he’d been carrying since Thursday and probably worsened after performing it earlier), Tony wouldn’t be doing the dance-off, but would withdraw. (I hope Tyler doesn’t feel too bad, because he was going to win that head to head in most of the ‘verses.) I presume Shirley was talking on behalf of the English nation, because I’ve been over him for most of the show, and one decent quickstep doesn’t make up for the rest of it. Kinder sentiments than that were expressed on the show. For the ‘last dance’ he tried to strip tease, but got hugged out of going beyond the jacket, and after a cut, got lifted by the contestants.
9 become the right 8.
