[personal profile] shallowness
Opening with clips of the pros, judges and Jason talking about what Strictly means to them, and then a better group routine than last night’s. Inspired to have two kids representing the featured dancers’ younger selves and their journey (nice nod to that multigenerational routine from years ago), while Sam Ryder interpreted the song beautifully, and it felt like proper dancing that was showy, but kept within some formal constraints. Really good. I’m sure I misheard Claudia saying the girl dancer’s name, because it sounded like it was Pebble (and I loved how the boy didn’t care about the height difference AND I thought Ellie could learn from the girl’s arm movements.)

TessnClaud ‘s party attire was…well, Tess was inspired by Quality Street and Claudia went for a zebra print trouser suit.

The recap distributed the couples into the obvious three groups: the top 3; the 35ers, and Kym and Graziano and Ellie and Johannes.

First results: Fleur was safe and thanking the voters, although being on top made them barely needed, Hamza was called safe, and then – shocker – Ellie and Johannes, who had a more subdued shocked reaction than usual. But Molly and Carlos were not. Ack. Anton set the right tone for her to approach it with a positive mindset.

In the not!Clauditorium, we learned another reason why Mr Fleur isn’t worried about Vito; how Hamza’s a proper celeb now; and Ellie thanking the voters more plausibly than Fleur (although being in the dance-off has clearly scarred Fleur.) Dancing-wise, Ellie really deserved to be in the dance-off. It’s arguable that Johannes had choreographed her a perfect send-off. Yes, she’s got funny bones and yes, she’s improved, but she’s had her gimmes, her ballroom isn’t as good as the rest’s and the judges are going to pile on in on her Latin. Don’t turn her into the new Tony Adams, voting public.

Sam Ryder was on again, singing his own song of heartbreak and showing off a fabulous falsetto, as Neil and Gio and some lady pros (was one of them Michelle?) did a kind of rumba showdance.

Judges: snazzy trousersuit from Shirley. Motsi wants to stay in Blackpool (but I don’t think the set designers do), Shirley praised Hamza (although we’ve known he can do good lifts for weeks, Ballas), Anton talked more about his craving for applause than Helen’s quickstep and Craig expanded on why he’d given Fleur a 10 and how hard it is for him to raise a 10 paddle. I laughed at that, but politely disagreed and wondered if he’ll watch it back on telly.

Helen and Will were called safe, leaving Kym with the lower score and Tyler, fresh from being bottom 2 last week, waiting to learn…Tyler and Dianne would be in the dance-off. Ouch. And a toughie, because they got the same score. Motsi got pep talk duties.

No injuries, so the dance-off was on, and I was reminded again of how much I liked Molly and Carlos’s jive, and that she had some busy interaction with the pros towards the end, while Tyler danced with some towards the start of his disco!salsa. I thought the first lift was more laboured this time around, but the judges claimed that both couples had raised their game, and Craig made a point of praising Tyler’s hips this time around, but it wasn’t surprising that it was a split decision that got thrown to Shirley who saved Molly and Carlos (again.) I thought Tyler deserved to be in a little longer, although he seemed to have reached his ceiling, but he praised how the show had given him confidence sincerely. Awk last dance, mainly a lift, that soon became a big old group huddle.

[Edited for typos 14/2/25.]

Monday’s It Takes Two revealed that they couldn’t hear the sound on the floor at the start of Ellie and Johannes’s routine. Yikes. I was also reminded of how much I'd enjoyed Tyler's jive, Charleston, couples choice, tango and cha cha.
