Strictly Results show (on a Monday!)

The recap was a mite selective, no? Its high point may be Molly being naively pleased that Anton had given her a 10, when I struggled to recall if he’d given anyone an 8 on the night, (although it would later emerge that he’d never given them a 10 before their American smooth, apparently.) But anybody watching that – even if the producers wanted to give the Manchester couples choice the glory slot as they had with the live show’s running order – would have no clue why Will had got a 32 or been at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Results: and the producers made the right call by calling Molly and Carlos first. They understandably EXPLODED. Next to be called safe? Hamza and Jowita, he was introverted in shock, while Jowita celebrated like a pro through to the final with her first celeb partner (absent all the dance-off experience that Carlos and Vito have had.) Speaking of, not safe? Fleur and Vito. Fleur tried to take the broad view, Anton urged her to dance with more freedom, while Motsi went for call and reply exhortation.

Outpourings of relief and joy in the Clauditorium, where Molly and Carlos were all ‘being in the final is as good as winning’ which seems realistic. Claudia coaxed a little more reaction from Hamza – Jowita’s clearly going to have to manage his tired and emotional state.

Lewis Capldi sang a ballad that is less annoying than his last single, and Gio and Katya’s dance was gorgeous.

Judges talk: Motsi got to talk about Molly’s paso, Shirley was acuter about Fleur’s Charleston. Interesting idea to have Anton discuss Helen and Hamza’s waltzes, although all he said was ‘alas, they weren’t quite good enough for even me to give them 10s’, while Craig got to admire Will for dancing his couples choice like he had nothing to lose. I think the audience would rather have heard why Craig hadn’t given Molly’s paso a 10.

Fun It Takes Two trailer: ain’t no party like an S Club party indeed.

Tense second batch of results as the two lowest placed couples waited. Helen and Gorka were called safe, and couldn’t really celebrate because Will and Nancy were in the dance-off. As I’d realised after the live show, that was a reprieve for Helen, because she’d have to improve her posture something drastic to have got saved.

And then the dance off, and for me, Fleur danced the Charleston a little less well this time around. The lifts weren’t quite so good, and sometimes she was forcing the power. I mean, it was still a very good Charleston (and Vito was brave for sticking to his spaghetti eating). I also thought that Will danced his couples choice really well.

All the judges said it was close. Craig and Motsi saved Fleur, Anton, citing a dismount, saved Will, leaving it to Shirley who …saved Fleur, which I’m overall happy about, because I like her more and I’ve liked more of her dances, but I wouldn’t have been surprised if the result had gone the other way.

What sadly did become clear is that Nancy is going to have scar tissue having been denied the final for the second time running.

Three lady celebs and lovely Hamza , though! That’s better than I expected.

It Takes Two came straight after (although I went to type up those thoughts before pressing play,) giving the couples more time to process than us. Will had had time to rewatch the paso see it wasn’t that bad/as bad as he’d thought and realised he’d betrayed his claim of only being happy if Nancy was happy. She said she was with the paso but she was a gutted wreck at leaving at this point.

We learned that the two dances a punch drunk Helen and Gorka will be reprising will be her couples choice and her jive. I approve of both of those choices, though it seemed like she was choosing the couples choice for the viewers as much as herself, if not more. They’ll be dancing it without extra dancers, of course.

On Tuesday, Harry, Ore and Bill made for a nice, relatively thoughtful winners’ panel, while we learned that Fleur and Vito would be doing their couples choice, their samba and a nod to most of the rest of their Latin dances in their showdance, which is understandable. Another chance to decide whether Fleur is more Beyonce or Janet, and I truly loved that samba.

I already knew that Molly woud be reprising her rumba, and while I’m not that excited, I can see why they chose it, but I’m pleased that the judges are asking them to reprise their quickstep. As for doing their showdance to a Prince medley, is Molly woman enough? For her, partying like it’s 1999 is, like, historical re-enactment.

Johannes, Dianne and Katya had a feature about memorable showdances, which was ..selective. We were reminded of how Katya and Joe’s, which apparently won them the glitterball (I think you can argue that Ore won it via a better final, but hardly anyone else) was mostly about Katya’s costume changes. It would have been nice if Caroline and Pasha’s had got recognised, because I think that was largely responsible for contemporary and couples choice becoming acceptable dances on the show. But Colin and Erin’s Salutary Lesson showdance was included.

I knew before last night’s ITT that Hamza and Jowita will be reprising their salsa and couples choice, and nodding to ballroom in their showdance. All that seems about right.

Interesting that Vicky Gill selected two pro dresses as particular highlights of the year, mainly because they’d had more time to finesse them.
