2.11 Old Alabama

About a month after going public, Zoe and Wade were all loved up until Lavon guilted Zoe (and thus them) into dressing up as the first couple in a town re-enactment of its founding or something. Oh, and he got into Zoe’s head about how the honeymoon phase wouldn’t last. A reporter was going to cover this re-enactment, so there was a subplot where Lemon and Annabeth fake broke up so that they could get the catering gig for it and thus publicity, while Lemon ended up playing the grog wench because Lavon was still mad with her. Lemon didn’t take an opportunity to explain why she’d torpedoed Lavon/Ruby, although he still needs to face up to the fact it wasn’t very hard to torpedo.

George was playing reluctant relationship guru for Brick/Shelby (aka the man who nearly became his father in law and an ex girlfriend of about his and Lemon’s age.) Also to Wade (and indirectly Zoe.)

Cricket lent Zoe the diary of the lady whose part she would be taking, a woman who had had a long and happy marriage. Zoe took her advice to avoid arguments and to turn her resulting aggravation into positivity i.e. Projects to heart. Wade did indeed relapse into behaviour that he’d later describe ‘boneheaded’. Instead of exploding, Zoe was Very Understanding. And Very Into Her Projects and increasingly more like Lemon than the woman Wade wanted to be his girlfriend. So he decided to wind her up on purpose, to get the explosion out of her system, but he did this right before the big feast in front of everyone and the reporter Lavon was trying to impress. It was learning that Wade and his friend had been to a strip club that did it. Cue an irate speech from Zoe in front of everyone (but the reporter found it ‘refreshing’.)

I liked that Zoe was driven by terror that by fighting she and Wade would be turning into her parents – the show didn’t overplay it – and admitted to Wade that she hadn’t ever been in a real relationship before (alas, New York ex of several years, you don’t count), even though Zoe and Wade wouldn’t be them if they didn’t argue. He said as much in their heart to heart.

I didn’t really buy that Wade would have read that diary to the end, so either he’s someone who reads the last page of a book first (still implausible) or George or some Bluebell old timer gave him the pointer. Anyway, I liked the affectionate kiss when he handed it to her after all the more carnal kissing, and they ended the ep in a good place.

2.12 Islands in the Stream

A bitchy Lemon and a cowardly Brick meant that instead of Brick telling his girls the truth, Shelby was somehow the new receptionist for the practice.

Mrs Tucker was snide because George hadn’t told his parents he was now living on a houseboat, or about Tansy. Poor Tansy got dragged along to go and see a French film…that Zoe and Wade were going to see (because, as Zoe fairly pointed out, he’d made her go to a demolition derby.) We were reminded that Wade and Tansy have a lot in common, and so do George and Zoe (though I wouldn’t call them cineastes.)

Mrs Tucker was that minority species: a Zoe/George shipper (because she hoped Zoe might get George to leave Bluebell.) Mr Tucker inaccurately claimed his wife’s machinations led to Jacobean dramas.

Meanwhile, Annabeth was bowled over by an English accent, but Lavon was sure he’d seen that face before.
George had asked Zoe on a double date because they’d had such a good time, but both Wade and Tansy did NOT like that idea (and as people who used to be married, they did have a point as well as insecurities) so we had some wacky fake excuses, while Brick talked Shelby into trying to make nice with Lemon, as well as doing receptionist work.

Lavon worked out where he knew The Accent from (I think the actor must be English, although nobody from the UK would believe Oliver was a Brummie.) He turned out to have Foreign Accent Syndrome, and was coasting on the accent. Lavon called him out on lying, I idly wondered whether this emanated from protectiveness of AB or just giving Lavon something to do.

Zoe/Wade and George/Tansy ended up going to the same place for separate dinners so the fake excuses got busted. George wanted them to have the double date anyway, Zoe sided with him, Wade and Tansy did not. But then George’s mother called with a pack of lies to get Zoe and George to the houseboat, which she unmoored and set out on the sea until they …saw the light and coupled up or convinced her why they shouldn’t. I felt a mild pang of sympathy for George for when he had this level of crazy AND LEMON’S in his life.

Zoe texted Wade about the kidnapping. Tansy insisted he gave her a ride to the houseboat, where they got to overhear the end of a mildly amusing fake bit of lawyering where Zoe had to explain to a prosecuting Mrs T why she and George hadn’t got together. Tansy was the one who got most upset at Mrs T for treating her like she wasn’t good enough and at George for any sign that he didn’t think they had a future, although she had her own insecurities, as she had admitted and rightly blamed Wade for a little. So, Tansy stomped off claiming she didn’t want any drama, followed by George, leaving a chilled in comparison Wade, an awkward Zoe and Mrs T, drinking away.

Meanwhile, Oliver told AB the truth and she was all, ‘You should get the migraines treated and I’ll still find you hot, accent schmaccent.’ So, they went to Brick’s, so Lemon believed that Brick’s affair was with AB (huh, I thought she’d twigged it was Shelby), and accosted Brick and AB. AB figured out that her BF hadn’t been listening to her talk about Oliver, who, after treatment, had a fairly decent southern drawl (that she found less hot), so Brick was forced to admit he was seeing Shelby. Lemon apologised and scuttled away.

George talked to Tansy about how he saw things, and that he kept choosing not to be with Zoe (a bit revisionist, that, I think Zoe kept choosing not to be with him and he had to put up with it.) He claimed he was starting to be okay with not ending up with Zoe. Zoe walked into the conversation and said much the same. Wade (but apparently not Mrs T) could overhear this conversation, including when Tansy was insulting him. Heh.

It turned out Lavon had been intentionally protecting AB, who was all alone because Oliver had realised that she didn’t find him as hot without The Accent. AB asked Lavon if she was terrible, and no, obviously not, Anyway, under the knowing gaze of Wade’s boss, they shared a moment, and I was all NO! I could see Lavon/AB working as a couple, but not with Lemon in the picture. What she might do if Lavon goes after her BF doesn’t bear thinking about (although I would like AB to have some kind of proper reward for putting up with Lemon.)

Lemon had already pretended to her father that she was okay with him and Shelby being a thing, but showed her true colours to Shelby in such a way that never mind my position on Shelby/Brick, which has moved from not loving the age gap to really not loving hmi takin advantage of her to protectiveness towards Shelby.

Wade showed that he’d been thinking during all the Mrs Tucker drama…about what a bartender would earn in New York. Tansy showed George had sweet talked her into a more secure place by suggesting that the four of them had food together.
