shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Rogue X-Men Films)
[personal profile] shallowness
Crazy set-ups were crazy for this ep: a sleep-deprived Wade wanted to win Battle of the Bands to get funding for his new bar, but his new singer and pal Meathead sounded terrible and they were taking a death metal route in a place where country reigns supreme, which even Zoe could hear was a terrible idea. George was feeling a little less because even Tansy agreed with Zoe that musicians were hot. (Not Meathead…it worked in the moment.)

Lavon was marrying people by proxy (WHUT?) even though he was trying to swear off romance after AB said they couldn’t be together. But it made proxy groom Tom want to marry his proxy bride Wanda for real, and he needed Lavon’s help., because Lavon’s marriage proposal to Ruby was sooo romantic, even if it was futile.

Annabeth was trying to make up with Lemon, who was avoiding her just as hard, having spent every night with Walt, but having to let him go to a bachelor party. So, she was left a little on the lonesome side on the weekend (Brick was away with Shelby, AGAIN) until Magnolia was returned home from a school trip for bad behaviour, which Lemon kept excusing until Walt blew off the straitlaced bachelor party. So, she dropped Magnolia, who was always going to react by trying to go to the Battle of the Bands, because she still has that convenient thing for Wade, while smarting about Lemon’s treatment of her.

Cricket’s answer to AB’s situation was that they use a tracker app to ‘accidentally’ bump into Lemon to try to get her to forgive AB sooner rather than later. The reason that Cricket had the app on her phone was totally believable, though I’m not sure it’s always twoway, but sure, stalking is wacky when it happens in Bluebell…

Zoe tried to drag George into getting Wade to ditch Meathead, and in the end, she had to be brutally honest. Wade claimed he just wanted unwavering (mendacious) support from his girlfriend. This led to Meathead storming off, claiming Wade was a sellout, and his replacement George then found out that Tansy doesn’t want her boyf to be a musician, actually.

There were issues with horses for Tom to overcome, while Lavon overheard Wanda saying something that he interpreted as meaning she didn’t want Tom to propose to her, when it was obvious there was going to be a wacky misunderstanding. Zoe showed Wade that supportive girlfriends actually buy pre-emptive signs for their boyfriend’s future bars, and he was a bit emotional, but she was called away to see to Tom, who was then called away to an ‘emergency’ in the town square. What, another one?

Well, no, it was half the town dressed up as zombies, for Wanda to serenade Tom with his favourite song, (no, not Thriller, the more affordable and credible ‘Islands in the Stream’) and in between a duet for her to propose to him. Zoe and Lavon – played by the two actors who I don’t think can sing – were left to dance and comment on how weird it all was. Well, yes, but we’d been prepared that it would be weird by all that had come before.

At the BoB, Wade drank and drank some more. George had flatly told Tansy that he wasn’t going to let her dictate his every choice like Lemon had and she could like it or lump it. She decided to be a supportive girlfriend. Unfortunately, Wade was self-sabotaging b drinking like his father and resented ‘golden boy’ George’s every attempt to help, dumped him, brought Meatball back and lost the BoB (off screen, fortunately.)

Meanwhile Lemon stopped Magnolia from getting in to the BoB, got suspicious at the coincidence of AB and Cricket turning up there too, and said she wanted to dissolve their catering company! When they got home, Lemon revealed to her sister that Walt had dumped her (offscreen) because she’d been so clingy, trying to avoid feeling lonesome without her best friend. Lemon admitted she’d let Magnolia down as a (boundary-setting) big sister.

Lavon called on AB to tell her that he would wait for her (because he’d been touched by Tom/Wanda).

Zoe conveniently turned up late to learn most of the story of the BoB from a tactful George and Tansy – not the drinking part – Wade getting drunk like his father feels particularly horrid. Sing country songs, don't live them!

[ETA: I've watched the next episode and reaised I didn't take in something pretty major at the end of the episode, which is why I haven't mentioned it.] [Edited for typos 25/5/25.]
