3.3 Take This Job and Shove It
Silly plotlines included Lavon trying to get a minor league baseball club to come to Bluebell, rather than Phillmore, which meant forcing Brick to reconnect with an old college friend who clearly had a crush on him and he couldn’t stand. I felt for Brick here.
Lemon was getting increasingly frustrated by how Cricket was running the Belles, and with loyal AB’s help tried to stir up the spirit of resistance and revolution (as both are French things starting with R, obviously they’re interchangeable). Cricket caught her at it and revealed that she learned everything she knew about leading the Belles from Lemon (hence the dictatorial style.) She made Lemon carry out sanctions for her disloyalty – in a pink check jumpsuit, which was mildly amusing.
George was still being flirted at under duress by – the way he said her name it sometimes sounded like Lemon AKA Lavon’s cousin.
So, the most important plotline was Zoe’s plan to get Brick to reinstate her as partner, which she explained to Joel. It didn’t seem to be working, as Brick was suspicious of Zoe’s motives, and even more so after Joel blundered badly in conversation with him. George’s first substantial conversation with Zoe for months was to tell her that she couldn’t use the threat of setting up her own practice in Bluebell because she’d signed a do not compete clause. She was going stir crazy not doctoring, while Frank the drugstore guy was apparently a part-time PI and keeping a rather obvious eye on her for Brick.
Wade was an amused observer for most of this episode.
When Whatshername’s latest attempt at seducing George led to a fingers in zip incident (possibly the most icky injury detail they’ve had on the show), with Brick selling himself at lunch with Lavon, George had to call Zoe. She had to call Wade to get Frank off her tail. Which he did, because helping Zoe is in his blood. He continued helping Zoe by punching Joel in the gut to help him fake appendicitis to distract Brick. Who had left his very important meeting, because Zoe threatening his career was understandably more important to him. This led to his former admirer unfriending him, which he’d long wanted, so that was a win for Brick. If not Lavon.
As Zoe finished off treating George, he pointed out that Brick was being mean to her because he was hurt – citing Harley’s death – and so Zoe mustered up a decent apology, and got Brick to admit he had lashed out because of all the abandonment (although unlike Zoe and Shelby, Marigold didn’t ‘leave’ you, Brick, you sent her to boarding school). He offered her a position as an associate with the potential of becoming partner again.
After doing her time…Lemon quit the Belles, followed by the ever-loyal AB. Given that Zoe walked away from it in the first season, when Lemon was treating her even worse, I have no idea why they were framing it as a win for Lemon and true friendship – Cricket was following her, less well, but still.
Zoe told Wade he could officially call her Doc again – not that he’d stopped. He told her to stop giving Joel a hard time, while accurately recounting how much worse her New Yorker in Bluebell fails had been. She went and had a moment with her boyfriend while the guest country band performed at the Rammer Jammer. There was no cut to Wade watching the couple kiss or dance.
I watched this about a week later, it’s just easier to post about both the same time.
3.4 Help Me Make It Through the Night
Lemon’s social life was a disaster thanks to Cricket, or so she’d have it, so she decided to call upon her never before mentioned grandmother, who the script claimed had cut contact with them after the wedding that wasn’t. Nice try, but she was still never mentioned in the whole season leading up to it. However (even though I wonder at the actors’ ages) she was as rude as advertised, and amusingly called Brick ‘Bertram’.
Zoe and Joel’s social life was not oing how Zoe imagined it, because Joel and Lavon would not interact because of the unfortunale book review. Worse, as Zoe saw it, Joel was readier to hang out with Wade. That would be Wade who had started sleeping around again, this time with a brunette, who turned out to have a tanklike giant boyfriend who was out for ‘Wade Kinsella’. So, Wade invited himself as George’s plus one to the snooty ‘Halloween masquerade’ Lemon had wangled an invite and a date, thanks to her grandma.
At work, Brick was stil punishing Zoe, but fortunatelu, AB asked her to do her medical because she wanted girl advice, because she thought Lavon, who was claiming their fake date last Halloween was their anniversary (like AB, I crinkle up my nose at that,) was going to propose based on what he said. As this wasn’t even their real anniversary, AB thought it was too early.
But then Zoe found a growth on AB’s ovary that pushed that worry aside. Though cancer was conveniently ruled out, other things, including possible infertility, wouldn’t be for 24 hours. (I suspect medical science was subordinated for plot convenience.) Insead of..telling Lavon any of this, AB asked Zoe to get her out of the big night out with him.
That’s not to mention Dash’s Frankenstein performance…which looked way more fun than the snooty party.
Wade and George had about three seconds of slahser baiiting, (They’d also have three more later in the episode.) Grandma Breeland was nasty to everyone, which led to an amusing calvacade of characters dragging someone else to take their turn. Lemon’s date was a dud, because her grandma was punishing her for shaming the family (is that where Brick got it from?) Unsurprisingly, the hot guy she’d been rude to at the Rammer Jammer was at the do and appealed to her evil streak. Wade picked up another random lady while Joel, in the throes of his weird friendship crush, was waiting for him at the Rammer Jammer, dressed as .. Marc Antony (with specacles.) Zoe was dressed as Cleoparta, and pulling the ‘medical emergency’ card. (Get used to it Joel.)
She was actually pretending to that she wanted Lavon and Joel to mend fences to help AB stall Lavon from proposing to her. (I think the fact AB wouldn’t share her medical concerns with her boyfriend is the real issue here, however much a Zoe/AB friendshipper I am.)
So, Lemon skipped the party and bared her soul to the hot stranger, George realised that Wade had had sex in an ante chamber…with a judge’s wife. Lavon and Joel found they had Game of Thrones in common. AB went to open the door on the cutest little trick and treater and got upset…Joel was smart enough to figure out why Zoe was acting like this and not been wlliing to tell him (fair play, they did seem to have a functional relationship in this ep) so he heroically lied about why AB was upset, rekindling Lavon’s ire at him.
Lemon’s charming rolling stone reached for her stray hair one too many times for me, but it worked for Lemon. (I mean, c’mon, Brick, what do you think your daughter means when she comes home glowing after not answering her phone and says she has had ‘a wonderful night’?) The fact that she was wearing his white shirt kind of meant that the morning after scene didn’t work for me, although he seemed like a plausible love interest (give or take being a rolling stone vs. Lemon being Bluebell to the core. Which would not be a problem for Lemon/Meatball.)
AB pleaded a headache and asked Zoe to take her home – which surprised me, becase I’d assumed she’d pretty much moved into Lavon’s.
George, who really had the most thankless arc this ep, started prying at Wade’s damage when he pulled up outside Wade’s, then saw the ‘large gentleman’ searching for Wade and rode off. Wade denied that his sleeping with available unavailable women had anything to do with Zoe, George was right, he should have let Wade sleep in the truck.
The next morning Zoe relayed the good news to AB that it was just a treatable cyst and she could totally have Lavon’s babies. Wade’s self-preservation kicked in and he turned down the available unavailable woman from the start of the episode. (The one with the ‘large gentleman’ as a boyfriend, not the one with a much older judge as a husband.) And then he decided he was going to leave the Rammer Jammer for a trip with new bud Joel – Wade and Lemon were being very neglectful business owners this ep.
Quelle surprise, it turned out that Lavon hadn’t been planning to propose. Zoe and AB united in shouting ‘men!’ in disgust, leaving Lavon, Joel and Wade to go on a manly trip together. (If Joel is hanging with Wade, he’s not making Zoe laugh, and Wade’s subconscious may have figured that out.)
