A brief take on The Suicide Squad

I’m a degree less excited about James Gunn’s new role with the DCU after watching this. How did he and the suits miss the fact that it should have been a Harley Quinn movie, especially after the best sequence in the whole film involves her rescuing herself after being tortured?
Instead we get a slightly different flavour of the amoral sludge that was Suicide Squad: yeah, yeah, Waller’s the scariest, oh look, Idris Elba is playing Will Smith, is that a joke about how many super duper markspeople DC has come up with over the years, oh sigh, the sharkman is staying. It leaned a bit more into the weird, and for me, where that worked best was when we got Polka Dot Man’s POV of the world, where everyone looked like his mother. I get the rats are just like our ‘heroes’ thing, but that’s a lot of rats. And what was with all the bird slaughter??? It was trying to be funnier than it actually was. There was more gore than I’d like, and for what? The Guardians of the Galaxy did their thing for a PG-13 rating and that was way better. And in that light: the Weasel = Howard the Duck.
I think I’d have been even more disgruntled if I’d made the effort to go to the cinema to see all that, instead of just watching it on telly at home.
Admittedly, between seeing it and posting this, I have gone looking for fix-it Harley Quinn/Rick Flag fic and found it, which was validating (I’ve also been reminded that I ought to have opinions about Rick Flag/June Moore other than nobody should encourage Cara Delavigne’s acting career. Eh, several years have passed.)
