The Wheel of Time 1.3 A Place of Safety

Interesting developments! Unlike Lan, we learned how Nynaeve had escaped the monsters. He seemed very put out that she’d tracked them (i.e. him!) but for one thing, the marauding hordes coming after them would have been easy to follow and for another wouldn’t she have listened to the wind? He bested her, then wanted her to treat Moiraine, she thought she had some leverage there – ooh, there’s a bond between an Isedai (sp?) Aes Sedai and her Warder, is there? But once she started treating Moiraine, I thought it likely she’d carry on doing her best for her.
So, the Dragon Gang were split into three (how very The Two Towers) in three different landscapes at that. But I liked what the pairings of the Two Rivers kids threw up – Rand was on balance more sensible than Mat!? And they met some interesting people. I was surprised by the revelation about the bartender, who left questions about her highly detailed dreams in her wake. When we first met the Gleeman, he did seem a bit too much like something from out world, but when he got talking, he felt more of this fictional world, and respect to anyone who can throw a knife like that. (Though I reserve the right to snerk at his theme music.) And eventually, nudged by the wolves, Perrin and Egwenne found a more positive representation of Irish Travellers than some other Amazon Original shows have produced. With one of their number being played by Maria Doyle Kennedy (Jupiter’s mum in Jupiter Ascending) and the young man being staggeringly beautiful in a far from ugly cast, that’s good, innit? Should also say I am loving all the ladies’ jewellery (apart from the bulbous Aes Sedai rings.)
And then the other three encountered the Aes Sedai we’d seen in the very first schene of the show, with her blue eyes and her bad vibes (overly confident and arrogant), who I guess Lan is hoping will heal Moiraine. Who also claimed to have the Dragon reborn (a man with crazy eyes) in custody. This in an episode where we’d been reminded of Perrin’s connection to wolves that he doesn’t want to talk about, seen Rand tap into unnatural strength and…learned Mat has an affinity for shiny things, even stealing off the dead. And Egwenne was tapping into the One Power on a small but useful scale. But we also had intimations (from someone who stans for someone literally called The Dark One) that what the Isedai had planned for the Dragon Reborn might not be all good.
Anyway, all the kids seemed to have decided or had to decide to shelve their doubts and head east for the White Tower.
My biggest criticism of this episode is that Moiraine had nothing to do except be wan and suffer fetchingly.
