1.15 When You’re Tired of Breaking Other Hearts
Biggest moment: Deacon’s revelation about his dead friend Vince. Whoa, there. Does Rayna know about that?
And actually, I'd love to find out how Rayna and Deacon actually met.
Meanwhile, there was lots of hostility lacing Rayna and Teddy’s interactions, although she was totally right to let rip on Juliette for endangering her fans, if perhaps a little guilty of taking out all her feelings on Juliette. But as that one seemed to ignore her culpability, it's hard to care.
Oh, my kids. I was glad that Scarlett could see where Gunnar’s behaviour was coming from, although he did behave badly, pushing her away so hard, and now there are consequences careerwise that all the hindsight in the world can’t reverse. I’m glad they made up, even if they kind of had to after Deacon’s speech (the cynic in me isn’t sure that his piling of all his regret on them means it’s right for them, the shipper in me is glad Gunnar isn’t hurting her any more, and especially that they made up while Avery was singing.)
Avery pulled some epic idiocy. Maybe he’s learned a little humility, but even if he can sing prettily, I don’t much care. I care a little more about Juliette’s growing pains.
The effect when Rayna was listening to Scarlett was interesting – like she could hear how she’d sound with production playing. It was fine, but didn’t quite have the frisson of the duets.
I have had thoughts about calling the show Nashville but how it isn’t much about the city - The Bluebird Cafe is perhaps the place that has left most of an impression, but this episode was better on this front, from Lemar confronting the new mayor and deputy about the stadium to the vet who doesn’t like country, nicely contrasted to the way that everyone at the vet’s recognised Deacon and were listening in on his attempt to get her to go out.
We’ll see if Coleman trying to shake Deacon the romantic out of waiting for Rayna works. Okay, we’ll wait and see for how long it doesn’t.
HAS DEACON SERIOUSLY NEVER GIVEN THOUGHT TO HOW MADDIE MIGHT BE HIS BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER? SERIOUSLY? Isn’t it an elephant for Teddy too?
And when I say might, I mean ‘so is’.
1.16 I saw the light
So it’s a month later and Scarlett just didn’t tell Gunnar about the label’s offer. Oops.
I’m glad there seem to be consequences for Avery for his arson. I WONDER what tour he’s joining. (I expect him to get picked up for Rayna’s label too, although if the end of his story is that he went home, I would laugh.)
Chris Carmack in a cowboy hat – can he sing? Apparently so. Well, it’s always good to see him. No read on his character yet (is he gay? Is he going to stab Gunnar in the back professionally?)
I know Gunnar isn’t Avery, but Scarlett didn’t seem to have learned much to me. Interesting that Gunnar is kind of her muse, although she’s the talented one. But they stepped it up in the final scene, although I will hate the show if it withholds on Scarlett and Gunnar duetting.
Heh, Deacon didn’t really think through what it would mean for Stacie(sp?) to meet Rayna and vice versa. Stacie’s smart, though, picking up on all the nuances and has enough self-respect to demand respect. I think his giving up the tour just like that is a typical Deacon move (he hasn’t thought through). And the only person who didn’t think that a tour is a bad place for a puppy is Juliette.
Speaking of, off Juliette goes, charming Dante, getting what she thinks she wants.
The moment with the sisters singing was delightful.
Ahaha Peggy leaked the story! And now is in Lemarr’s pocket.
Teddy and Rayna need to think through their domestic arrangements.
Tandie letting slip that Rayna idolised her father as a child says a lot about Tandie and how and why she's become his right hand woman, perhaps, although again, in this episode, she was there for her sister and nieces.
