Hart of Dixie - 3.11 One More Last Chance

The previouslies contained nothing about Zoe, the main character of the show, which was telling about what’s going on with her this season. I’d even be tempted to argue that the episodes’s A-plot was saving Bluebell, as that was ultimately more important than Zoe, Joel, Wade and the Wilkes clan getting on. Perhaps because it’s been a while since I watched the previous episode, I was almost charmed by how Lavon’s plan to save the town (from the merger with Phlimore) was to get the Lieutenant Governor to deem Bluebell a historical town (they never mentioned that re-enactment of the town’s founding) by putting on a production of ‘What a charming and historical town Bluebell is’. There was even a rehearsal, where I was amused by Dash’s unimpressed impersonation as the LG.

Difficulties ensued because Lynley had burnt some of Tansy’s hair “accidentally” and wasn’t owning it. George seemed mighty concerned, while Lynley over-reacted (Tansy just reacted angrily, although I thought the hat she wore to cover the disaster was fetching.) Mayor Hayes wanted George/Lynley to act the happy couple, Cousin Lavon blamed George for making Lynley cry. George and Lynley eventually got to talk properly about it, though George didn’t quite admit he hadn’t got over Tansy (who’d now dumped Scooter) and Lynley didn’t really own that she’s high-strung and handles things badly.

The other big wrinkle in Lavon’s ‘plan’ turned out to be that Shelby saw the Lieutenant Governor’s picture and realised he was her babydaddy (after a drunken night in Mobil.) Ha! I knew she couldn’t afford IVF.

The actress playing AnnaBeth did great work conveying AB’s reaction to learning all this, although, as she pointed out, the man deserved to know he was going to be a father. Shelby took this advice to heart at the worst possible time, derailing the signing of the papers that would save Bluebell.

But the way they handled that, with her agreeing to go to Mobil so that the babydaddy could be in the baby’s life, ditching Brick just after they’d sort of seemed to decide to be a couple again, made me relieved I hadn’t got too involved in their plotline after getting burned at the end of s2. With Lynley leaving with a whimper too, why should I get involved in any new characters? (Having said that, if Zoe/Wade isn’t endgame and Lavon doesn’t marry AnnaBeth, I will be spitting nails. There are still things in which I’m invested or I would have long given up on this show.)

Lynley leaving meant that Zoe’s guesthouse would be free, I thought, but that was not to be the resolution of Zoe/Joe’s housing situation plot. They couldn’t agree on the two other possible options and so returned to trying to get Aunt Winifred’s house, but the Wilkses said that she was anti New Yorkers (she was.) Zoe was sure she could charm her. though! (As Joel observed, she and Lavon think very alike.)

Wade was trying had to charm his girlfriend’s eight-year-old son, with the incentive that doing so might mean s-e-x, which hadn’t been on the table up til then (which would be novel for Wade.) But whenever they were alone, li’l Harley made it clear that he hated Wade. (I’ve seen worse kid actors, but I am not madly enthused about having so many scenes of him in future episodes.)

Zoe and Wade (with Joel’s blessing) concocted a plan where he’d big her up to Aunt Winifred and she’d big him up to Harley. First they lied, then they told the affectionate truth, then Wade lost Harley’s prized pet, Zoe lied to protect Wade, but it kinda worked out in that Wade told Harley he wasn’t going anywhere and Vivian made sure she and Wade had sex. Zoe and Joel didn’t get their dream house, but agreed on ‘termite house’ and Joel said he thought they should buy, rather than rent it. (Whatever, see what I said about my preferred endgame.)
