Bit of a ragged episode, this, I found. With Monica sent away for study leave by the moustachioed consultant, stung that she hadn’t asked him for it because he was too old (but she had already had to rescue him for getting a diagnosis wrong in front of some new medical students.) Cue a terrible locum, Raj feeling stung that the (mostly white) staff thought he was rubbish because he was a Pakistani when it was because he was unqualified. Enter our first sight of management.
Moustache decided he’d step in as SRO which was both good and bad.
Andrew was still struggling, now not feeling well on top of the sleeplessness and demands of his job, capped by an aggressive bereaved family member. And we learned he’s a Christian, so he wasn’t going to go as far as his nurse girlfriend had been hoping (her conversation with the sister was, in its own way, as full of homosocial braggadocio as Raj’s with the anaesthetist, although the manboys were several degrees grosser.) It’s a thin line to walk, black comedy drama, especially when it comes to the characters, most of whom are in danger of veering into caricatures (Raj would be the main character, not the second male lead, if it were made now, but would his mum still be pushing an arranged marriage over the phone on him? Well, it would be via mobile.)
We got a sense of all the different groupings protecting their own interests: surgical vs medical, doctors vs nurses, management vs medical staff. Yet, somehow one poorly patient did make it through the night. It's just, some of the short scenes left me really confused.
The best scene was Claire (of course) dealing with a suicidal patient with mordant self-interest, although as ever, she had a few flashes of humanity in the episode.
