Cardiac Arrest - 2.3 The Kindness of Strangers

This episode had its ragged edges, such as Claire’s bombshell announcement that she wasn’t sure that she still wanted to be a doctor, thanks. (The rest of the episode rather strongly showed why even if she wasn't to the forefront.)

There were two threads, one involving a teenage patient, seen by Raj, then Andrew because her father insisted, and he was more diligent, but the symptoms indicated no more than flu, and then not seen by her GP so she came back to casualty in a much worse state and clearly having meningitis. It was too late to do anything to save her, her father exploded, blaming Andrew, and Turner didn’t have his back because he was chums with GP Dr Wilson, and Andrew isn’t from the right class etc. An exhausted, angry Andrew did not take this well, and was rather obvious in his hostility to Dr Wilson (mistake as he was all set for war, even though Claire pointed out he was outmatched). So although he thought he’d been rather clever in his hints to another patient that Dr Wilson had misdiagnosed but the hospital had caught before she lost sight in her eye, he hadn’t in general. In the middle of all that his wife phoned him at an unfortunate time – the rest of the staff think she was the first Christian he fancied, not necessarily the most compatible wife he could have had – he pointedly didn’t turn to his Bible or prayer when he got to his room and he discovered his car had been vandalised just as he was finally about to go home after a very long and bad shift.

The other main thread involved Raj, a less competent doctor than Andrew despite being more experienced, who was teased mercilessly by James for not being able to pull. One of his attempts was with a sister’s 15 year old daughter, so he got threatened with bodily harm. When he did pull (with the help of lots of booze), James ruined it by accident and Scissors had the evidence. Scissors was mainly there to be agreeable to everyone, although that did include respecting the old good-hearted consultant. Raj finally agreed to let his mum introduce him to someone. She went overboard, but then he bumped into an old childhood friend who was now a police officer (run, sweetie, he hasn’t grown up and is still sexist.)

For the first time ever, we had a scene of many of the doctors sitting together to have lunch in a room – no table, but it seemed a little more relaxed than their usual grabbing of sandwiches.

Expats 1.4 had an overly theatrical set-up, with three sets of characters mainly trapped in three locations. I know it was meant to be all significant, but it took a lot of rather dull bits and people being horrid to each other to get to the revelations. We can add Hilary’s mother to the catalogue of awful mothers. I felt very sorry for the lady who was stuck in the lift and force fed Indian meat? balls and disturbing familial dynamics truths.
