Power shifts

Domino Day - 1.4
Maybe it’s an age thing, but when Domino (freaked out because she kept seeing people’s auras, Silas’s was a sickly yellow, but later his magical power would be green) bumped into her ex and eventually said a lot had happened fast, she then turned on a dime, decided she needed to find Cal, Silas followrd, and some more things happened very fast. In fact, the episode covered the rest of the night, so it was a lot of things happening very fast. Might not hurt Domino to pause a bit.
Silas was good to her while she was having a panic attack, but then reverted to type. Domino was able to track Cal by following his aura – unclear whether Sammie had this ability. Given everything, I’d have just run if I were Cal, but he still thought he could capture Domino and take her to the Elders and get all the glory. Idiot.
Not that Domino was entirely in control. She managed to send herself and Cal to another dimension (a forest) which Cal claimed to be either where the people lamias had banished were or banished lamias were. Anyway, Domino was powerful enough to bring them back to Manchester so that Silas could witness her continuing to give Cal some, until she magically burned him to death. Silas suggested that they run, indeed that they ran from Manchester…to Esme’s to do something to her ring so that he could get his powers back. He certainly is a single-minded toxic trashfire.
At home, a little more centred, Domino said no to this plan. She stood up to him, even though her nose was bleeding, suggesting she’d overused her powers and needed to feed. He gave her a nasty little speech about how, thanks to Cal, he knew that her mother had been a lamia too and killed her father by feeding off him (I’d like to query that, because how would Cal know, really, and are Cal and Silas, given their anti-Domino stances, the most reliable sources? Having said that, given what I’ve seen of the show so far, I suspect it is true.) He also went on and on about how much of a freakish monster she was (now that she wouldn’t do what he wanted) and that she deserved everything she got. Only swearier.
Domino was feeling awful about having killed Cal. It seemed unintentional, and that she hadn’t been in control of her powers.
Meanwhile at the coven, the conscious witches were still blaming Domino, worried sick about Sammie and had decided to give her a magical boost by giving her some of their combined powers (which should have made what happened next more difficult.) It worked, Sammie came to to find the coven broken, Geri (who had been all for finding Domino and handing her over to the Elders) furious with Kat for lying to them. They didn’t listen when Sammie pointed out she’d willingly let Domino suck her powers (and took the most Pollyannaish view of what had happened.)
Domino went out and about, and sitting in an alley like someone who’d had a very rough night, tried swiping the dating app for fresh meat. Fortunately, because she now seemed very weak, a Good Samaritan bloke came up to her, thinking she was down-and-out, and chuntered on about a hostel, not really listening when she asked him to go away, and so she sucked his powers. But after erasing his memory, she said it was for the last time.
Meanwhile a fellow Elder popped in to Esme’s to tell her that Cal had been burned to death by a witch in her jurisdiction. This was a polite heads-up that he’d be informing the others tomorrow. Now, instead of, I DUNNO, using her magic to find the killer, Esme started phoning around and her first call was to Silas. He got a bit bitter (although he did know who’d killed Cal, of course.) Further down the list of witches she called was Kat.
Domino then went to the plant shop, where three of the four witches welcomed her with an attack crouch. Palms up, she told them that she’d killed a witch, she was very ashamed and could they please do that severing spell on her? Sammie was all, ‘This is a bad idea, you’ll be denying who you really are.’ And while I agree with Pollyanna, she wasn’t really suggesting any way for Domino to control her powers or find a less harmful way of feeding to be the kind of lamia who can use her powers for good that we’ve seen glimpses of.
Meanwhile, Silas had turned up at Esme’s, telling her he’d make a deal, the info about Cal’s killer for the return of his powers. Esme didn’t push back very hard, because she was under such pressure from her fellow managers, er, Elders.
The coven did make sure that Domino was consenting to this spell. As the same time that they brewed it, set it up with sigils and a circle of salt, Esme and Silas were kneeling in a circle of candles at her home, as Esme prepared to unclip his powers. It was weirdly a more seductive scene with her being barefoot and him undoing a lot of his shirt. Have at it, witchy Jocasta and Oedipus.
The potion Domino was made to drink made her gag, Kat started chanting, joined in by the others, even a worried looking Sammie, Domino started levitating. SFX informed us that both spells worked (at about the same time.) A weakened Domino eventually said she felt free. She was told to rest to let her body get used to its new status. (Spoiler, she didn’t really listen.)
Silas also needed to recover. He had a bit of a flashback to the early days with Domino as if to tease us that he might have a conscience, but he decided to test out whether his powers were really back by forcing his mother’s assistant to pour boiling tea on her hands. So, the little sicko didn’t listen to his mother’s warnings and was still in torture mode (not a surprise given how he’d talked about Domino’s power after seeing what she’d done to Cal.) Eventually, he told his mother that Domino had killed Cal and that she was a lamia.
Eyes alight, Esme said that they’d have to kill her and take her to the Elders (so you get sniffy about your son’s torturing people but don’t mind killing, Esme. Noted.) This would re-establish her position.
Back in the flat, Domino took down some of the notes she’d written herself about her powers, went to pour a glass of vodka (sure, that’ll help you recover), managed to break the glass, cut herself, tried to heal herself magically, found she couldn’t, and would have to get round to buying a first-aid kit/be more careful in future. First, though, she deleted the dating app. She ended the night by waiting for Leon as he left the bar where he worked, offering to walk him home, all hopeful… (and vulnerable now that Esme is after her.)
The show seems to be urging us to be fine with Cal’s death. It wasn’t quite self-defence in the moment, though, was it, however much of a toerag and suck-up to an authoritarian regime he was!?
