Domino Day 1.5

Domino and Leon continued to hang out, enjoying themselves, but also sharing traumatic stories about their mothers. Leon’s Haitian mother had died giving birth to him, while I maintain that Domino shouldn’t assume that Silas’s version of what her mother was like based on Cal’s notes is the whole truth. This was interrupted by Domino having at least some sleep so she could dream about her mother reaching out to her. But then she was back hanging out with Leon in the kind of sun-kissed, blissful way that didn’t bode well by the rules of TV drama.

The only magic Esme seemed to use in this episode was to hurt Kat when she wasn’t particularly co-operative. For a high-powered, ambitious witch and representative of the big bads, the Elders, I am spectacularly unimpressed by Esme. Kat and her remaining coven were fairly unimpressed by Esme hurting Kat and what she and the elders planned to do to Domino too.

Cut to Esme and Silas conspiring and massively disagreeing about what to do to get Domino, as they were on slightly different ego trips. So, there was that in defenceless Domino’s favour.

Domino’s dreamy breakfast was interrupted by a call from her boss, asking her to open up the coffee shop due to a family emergency. One of the few customers who turned up was Sammie, and the place was quiet enough for Sammie to ask Domino how she was coping without her powers. But when Domino’s boss who is also Sammie’s ex turned up, it turned out that the family emergency was her brother having been mysteriously knocked out the night before bringing on his epilepsy. Because Manchester is, like, a village, the still-in-hospital brother was the Good Samaritan AKA the last person Domino drained.

Oops.

(But she was never going to be able to just skip away from all that she’d done, up to and including killing Cal.)

Silas hadn’t listened to his mother and went to Domino’s flat. Uninvited. (Stray thought, shame he’s not a vampire!) Meanwhile the other Elder came back to Esme’s. She’d run out of time (and as she had only used magic to unclip Silas and lash out at Kat, not to, like, find Domino, serve her right.) So she was magically branded, severed and demoted, I guess.

Domino had given Leon the keys to her flat, so the sweet innocent boy let himself in, only to find ex Silas there. As he pointed out, that’s creepy and inappropriate! Silas didn’t like Domino moving on and started mouthing off (telling the truth) and then talking about magic, which Leon disbelieved…until he tried to use his physical prowess to get Silas out, and Silas (unlike his mother) used his magic on him. Decent physical acting from the actor, as Leon was forced to punch himself, etc, etc, until Silas made him knock his head against something. Leon fell in a bad way.

Sammie – urged by Domino, a little, because she’d been insisting that witches and humans don’t mix – was offering comfort to her ex and agreeing to a drink. Domino, freaking out (and there’d been talk of police looking into CCTV for the attack so I thought this was stupid) returned to the scene of the crime. That is the power grab, not the burning to death. She saw a toxic boyfriend trashtalking his girlfriend, decided to get involved and then realised that she didn’t have any magical powers and just looked a bit silly. Sadly, the girlfriend was all placating and standing up for the boyfriend. (Make your escape plan, sweetheart!)

So Domino returned home and found Silas, at first trying to get her out, and then she saw Leon lying prone behind him. Silas urged her to use her powers to heal him, but the severance spell meant that she couldn’t. She called Sammie, who had to leave her potential girlfriend and tell her that no, she couldn’t come help Domino. Little ouch! At the flat, she had to tell a distraught Domino that she couldn’t read Leon’s aura, confirming that he was dead. (Who knows if Domino could have saved him had she access to her powers?)

Silas returned to his mother, who upon hearing that Domino’s powers were severed thought that now was the time to pick up the dreaded witch’s scold and, with the help of the Banished, get ‘the last lamia’ and restore her fortunes. Sammie took Domino back to the plant shop, where the coven were all like, ‘You can’t just undo a severance spell! You consented!’ In a mess and aware that Silas was dangerous, Domino was all like, ‘Please. I know what I said, but…’ Kat acceded but made no promises, and the episode ended with her ancestors back.

Felt smug for having cautioned Domino to take a breather before making big life decisions. Feeling a little sad for sweet, sacrificial Leon.

There was a bit where I wondered if they’d rejigged the order of some of the scenes and maybe showed Esme meeting Kat earlier than as scripted, or something.

I’ve seen quite a few of these beats before, and some of them have been better handled, but there may be legs for future seasons in the mystery of Domino’s mother and the dilemma of whether witches can date humans. But they’ll need a scarier big bad than Esme, who isn’t as scary as a Bad Boyfriend or working as a Scary Magic Using Villain. That is, if another series is commissioned. Anyway, things are probably set up for a confrontation in the finale. I would like to see them working on Domino controlling her hunger for power, though.
