Hart of Dixie - 4.2 The Curling Iron

Mostly predictable beats, but sometimes that's okay, as AB also became secret keeper to Brick about Shelby and to Zoe about the pregnancy, although the latter was obvious enough about it that she gave it away to Rose after being forced to give a sex talk to teenage girls, using the curling iron as an incredibly obvious metaphor. Hence the title.

Zoe was not dealing well with the news (several shop-bought pregnancy tests after she’d done one through the surgery) but in talking to Rose (who’s mature for a teenager, often more mature and sensible than Zoe, but still a teenager). realised that she wanted to have Wade’s baby. That had been so predictable because of the type of show it is.

Unfortunately, Wade was following Lemon’s advice about getting back in Zoe’s good books – grovel, grovel some more, have a plan, lay it out – which would have worked nine times out of ten. But telling her now that he wanted to do it properly and take it slow did not help. They weren’t communicating well all episode, so it took until the episode’s end for her to just inform him about the whole having his baby thing. He didn’t have much of a chance to get beyond surprised.

There was a slight countdown to Grandma Betty giving Lemon the final cheque and leaving for her long vacation. So, Brick put off Shelby, who wanted to go public. In between being mocked for the fire department debacle, Lavon and George were back on the scent of Lemon’s too perfect boyfriend du jour. Lavon sweet talked one of George’s exes, working at a florist, George sweet talked the maid working at the address where Henry was sending ‘his mother’ a dozen red roses every day. But the lady of the house was not there, I couldn’t quite buy that Henry had sent them to his good friend, the gentleman of the house. Turned out he wasn’t, but to the maid. The boys talked themselves out of being the messenger of this news to Lemon, worried it would be rebound badly on them, so a second after George suggested they anonymously tipped off the town blog (or they could have sent her an anonymous letter), they did.

Cricket’s ex turned out to have thrown all her dolls into the sea, after the public humiliation. She also managed to make Grandma Betty suspicious about how well things had worked out for Lemon, more by accident than design, I think, but Cricket was trying to take the positive from what Betty had intended as a swipe. So, Betty decided to ply AB, who was struggling to keep all the secrets at the goodbye party, with booze. It almost worked, but Brick came clean about his secret relationship with Shelby. Lemon tried to stick to her story (in fairness, she was keeping Henry’s secret, so it should have been a joint call to come clean.) To Lemon’s surprise, Shelby and Betty got on well (although maybe Brick should be worried about Shelby’s claim that she and his mother had a lot in common. Not that I think they necessarily do.)

But the ‘story’ that Henry was in love with AN Other broke on the blog, and the Breelands found out because the town sheriff had come to arrest Henry (because it’s Bluebell, not because he’d broken the law as far as I could tell.) Lemon, who’d been showing signs of being a decent person earlier in the ep, came clean and said she already knew about Henry’s real relationship, and they’d both been faking theirs (he was hoping for a trust fund from relatives who wouldn’t have liked him being with A (black) Servant.) Her grandmother tore up the cheque in disgust. (We await Lemon’s reaction when she realises it was Lavon and George who instigated that.)

Lemon’s signs of decency had been when she joined with AB, who sobered up quickly, to comfort Zoe after Wade’s go slow mis-step. Lemon never admitted she’d kind of given him that advice, perhaps because she hadn’t suggested he go slow, and hadn’t known about the pregnancy at the time. But she was almost as encouraging as AB about Zoe being able to be a good mother on her own.

The boys had been having a parallel bit of friendship as both George and Lavon admitted they’d enjoyed working together (to bring down what they thought was a common enemy) and Wade then demanded that they come drink with him after the most recent iteration of Zoe turning him down and his not really getting why. When they ran out of beer, Wade, not seeming that drunk, said he was going to hit Lavon’s liquor cabinet, it was eminently predictable that he’d cross paths with Zoe, which is when she told him she was having his baby. Alone.

I’m not sure what this episode told us about AB and Wade’s drinking prowess, but I will note that AB looked cute carrying Shelby’s baby (Shelby and Brick having dumped the kid on her so they could have sex, which isn’t really in AB’s job description). It was a reminder of all those kids with Lavon that AB had so wanted to have, and I now think won’t. I do hope they send her off properly, at the least, negotiating a better contract with Brick!
