Final results show of the series!
The couples were visibly nervous in the intro and in the clips of them just getting ready to walk back on to the studio in the recap footage. Pete and Jowita were wearing their Argentine tango cozzies, Sarah and Vito their tango blues, and the rest their highest scoring outfits. [ETA: As I now realise that Pete and Jowita were.]
First called safe: Sarah and Vito. I admit I was several percentages less overjoyed than them, but delighted and pleasantly surprised nonetheless. Also safe: Chris and Dianne, so I started enjoying the show. In trouble, Tasha and Aljiaz. She was upset (I was more sanguine that she wasn’t going to face another 40-scoring dance) and I kind of felt that Craig’s little speech was not quite as helpful as it could have been.
Very emotional in the Clauditorium, as Chris admitted to being broken since dancing the waltz, and clearly was overwhelmed. It got even more emosh as Sarah admitted she’d been psyching herself up to dance again and was on her way to tears when Vito said he was just being her mirror in her partner because she was such a great partner and then it was all waterworks, even from Claudia, I think, though she started a showmance hare running. (Granted, he’s had strong partners, but he and his choreography and personality and yeah looks are a big reason why this is his third final on the go. Plus this year he’s been the standard bearer for Italian male professional dancers.)
Becky Hill sang a song that was a bit slow and then a bit dancier, (basically forgettable) allowing Neil and Michelle, Gorka and Nancy, Luba and Katya to dance in black and white, with some paso in there, and lifts, most impressively from Luba.
The judges danced on to Claudia’s sofas and Anton rightly said that it was a midlife crisis in motion. Motsi picked the best series highlight, going back to Punam’s joyous Bollywood dance (whoever choreographed it is still anonymous), but we were reminded of the judges’ (the bit where Claudia joined in and went wrong, the Shining twins and the judges piling on Craig after his first 10 were stand-outs for me.)
Then Raye came and sang a jazzy ode to essential workers and shared the stage with Kai and Luba (having a good night) doing the sophisticated Fred and Ginge tribute act of your dreams. Outstanding from all the artists.
And then JB and Lauren learned that they were safe. (Top of the leaderboard is inviolate, even if it doesn’t feel like it.) Pete and Jowita were not, so we didn’t see his shocked face. YES! Shirley tried to pretend that it could be close, but her best advice was to enjoy every second of his last dance. So, JB won’t be reprising any of his dances with Amy, it looks like and it’s going to be an all-Lauren final, her first with a partner, and she’s going to enjoy having a versatile partner. (She deserves a good’un next season.)
We got to see Tasha and Aljiaz’s gorgeous, classy waltz again, and she’d got herself under control, and I think her joy in dancing swelled as the routine went on. Pete was a perfectly adequate partner for Jowita in what was more of a showdance than Argentine Tango, I got to take in that I like this moody, female vocal version of ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ so much more than the original, and good grief they were all but kissing for so much of that routine. But all the judges went for quality, and Pete was gent enough to celebrate Tasha, and finally gave the speech he’s been preparing for weeks. Look, he got to dance his favourite dance twice, his mum was there, and I think he’ll be okay with just turning up and doing a little bit of dancing in the final (so long as they don’t put him back in the pink PVC trousers.)
The right finalists, I hope they’ll all remain healthy, although if the celebs think they’re tired and emotional now, they have a week to find out differently. Good show, mainly because the voting public came through and stopped saving Pete, but with extra, unexpected emotion.
