Killjoys 1.2 The Sugar Point Run
The idea that D’avin should become a killjoy too felt like the characters were catching up with what the viewers assumed the premise was, so at least they didn’t string it out. What ‘soldier boy’ was able to offer on the main mission of the episode, both in terms of skill and moral compass, while mostly respecting Dutch’s abilities, made a decent case in his favour. We got to see a lot of Johnny’s relationship with (ironyless) ship’s AI Lucy, and what choices he makes. D’avin admitted a little titbit to Dutch, but he didn’t get many answers to his questions about her training, but we did via flashbacks, and they were horrifying, with her father figure forcing young Dutch to become an assassin. Relief all round as our heroine chose not to assassinate the name in her current box, as of yet, just prove she could and demand why he was a target.
I’ve also remembered that red boxes hold a specific role in British political life... (they’re the boxes that Ministers and the monarch get their official papers in.)
The show is fond of zippy scenes and fast cuts and slightly wonky angles (certainly in the opening sequence) as if to make us think it’s edgier than it is. The post military attack Sugar Point did feel a bit...generic, like yeah, yeah, you’ve seen Mad Max etc, although the reveal that the scavengers also took out organs was gross (and a sign of committed scavenging.)
[Edited for typos 6/4/25.]
