Killjoys - 1.5 A Glitch In The System

It started off with Our Three Killjoys smirking at each other (that’s never sustainable, you three). Actually, before that, D’avin was ambivalent about an appointment with Dr Silly Name to poke around his brain.

They were going to do a salvage job in an asteroid belt on what looked like a cargo ship, but it turned all horror-y after Dutch boarded, with a spooky, shadowy figure on a ship that had no life signs. [I started questioning the wisdom of my watching this last thing before turning in, but it ended up within my tolerance levels.] He turned out to be bloodied, the comms started playing up once the trio separated, and then Lucy disconnected from the ship, and them, even favourite Johnny, because of ‘contamination.’ But D’avin found an injured older soldier, who he bonded with a bit.

It ramped up as Dutch watched the creepy guy space himself, and then she found a lot of dead bodies who looked as though they’d been tortured; Johnny found footage that suggested the ship was actually military, had experimental interrogation/torture methods, and a solar flare, years ago, had made it go all funny. D’avin had got beaten, knocked out and imprisoned by the old soldier, (which would be embarrassing, but his elder was now fully healed) and found himself being questioned, tortured, healed if he answered satisfactorily, rinse and repeat. He was forced to admit he’d killed his squad and didn’t remember why – something that Johnny and Dutch overheard, because Johnny had hacked into the footage.

The programme was obsessed by Red 17, whatever that was. Dutch decided to go all self-sacrificial, or so it seemed to a horrified D’avin, but she had a plan, involving taking advantage of the nanobots and her ability to tolerate pain. She and Johnny got D’avin out of his prison and off the ship and they blew the ship up.

There was some emotional blowback, with Johnny expressing his hurt that D’avin hadn’t shared his big, dark secret with him, and vowing to help, because he’s a fixer. Dr Ridiculous Name informed D’avin that he couldn’t remember because someone had put memory blockers in his brain. And then they had sex. (D’avin having finally got off the black vest he’d been sporting all episode.) Okay, that wasn’t so much about the emotion as lust.

Dutch had just got decontaminated of the bots in her system, went to her cabin to chill and found her creepy father figure/assassination mentor there, with a body part from, presumably, the target that she’d refused to kill. He pointed out that she was vulnerable these days via a picture of her and Johnny, implicitly threatening him if ‘little bird’ didn’t come with. Oh dear. Of course, Johnny and D’avin know nothing of this.

Some things, particularly callbacks, worked better than others (the brothers’ ‘space rats’ code not so much) and I rolled my eyes when the cool alien script turned into comprehensible English when there was something we the audience needed to understand.
