Code of Silence – episode 4
Jul. 28th, 2025 06:09 pmAlison returned to see Liam after the goodbye kiss – he’d moved, it wasn’t clear how she knew where he now lived. So, it wasn’t a goodbye kiss. She found out he wanted to take her on a work do because Helen (the gang’s ladyboss) came to give her a somewhat scary lookover at the bar as she’d be paying for said work do. For instance, she knew about Alison’s dad. The police said yes, she could go although Alison hadn’t shared all the details with them. Helen said yes, Liam could go with Alison, the Hulk felt aggrieved that the new boy (who he didn’t trust, neither did he trust Alison) was getting this job.
Liam turned up at Alison’s looking fancy IN A PORSCHE (wonder how the other car company sponsoring this show/drama on ITVX felt about that) to take her to a five-star hotel, telling her to go along with it as he used another name. Oh, and had booked them in as a married couple, but used his hacking skills to upgrade them to a suite because it had two beds.
In the background, her ex didn’t think he could stop their eviction, but suggested going after the company who would no longer hire her mum – they weren’t getting any joy about renting somewhere new because she wasn’t working, and presumably Alison wasn’t earning enough for that to count.
Liam had got Alison a dress (that fitted perfectly). She tried snooping, but actually the information flowed to her, as they saw the Joshis, the gang’s target, were staying at the hotel and having dinner. Liam started honing in on Alison’s lipreading skill, asking her to lipread a couple at another table, as she asked questions about his work and his life so far – emphasising he’d come through the care system. Turned out he’d background checked her (but not found out about once working in the police canteen?) which was how Helen had known that her dad was a ‘rule breaker.’
Alison could have gone to bed alone, but made the decision to join Liam instead. Fade to black. I was impressed, the next morning, that she’d got her phone and hearing aids set up next to her. Liam watched her put one in, asked to have a look at the other and seemed to be grasping this aspect of Alison’s life more. She said putting the hearing aids on was like putting on clothes, putting on another identity – he grasped that she didn’t have to do that with someone who could sign.
As Alison’d been ignoring Ashleigh’s messages, she was getting worried, but had time to call out her subordinate for his attitude towards Alison. He thought Alison had dobbed on him for his cheating, Ashleigh reminded him that he was working with cops, and as someone who’d been left for ‘the one’, her sympathies weren’t with him when it came to his love life. He still got her to agree to his suggestion they try to find where Alison was by pingin her phone.
She had to lie to Liam and say that she was going to video chat with her mum – just outside of the hotel grounds, which she knew he’d knew, because she’d seen him hack into the hotel feeds. She shared most of what she knew with Ashleigh, returned to Liam, who had her lipread what the Joshis were saying. He drove her home, where she shared her mixed feelings, that the hotel trip wasn’t real, and she didn’t like what she knew of what he was doing.
The big reveal to the audience came that Liam had put a bug (possibly on Alison’s hearing aid, which is an extra level of sneaky and ironic) and so heard her telling the police all this, finding out that she was betraying him. BUT he didn’t seem to share this with the gang, who said that they were moving that night.
In a slight reversal, the inspector gave Alison a lift home and apologised for pushing her so much to get information. He’d also had a conversation with Ashleigh where he raised some very good questions about Liam (if that was his real name) and where he’d come from.
Meanwhile, Alison had gone to meet her ex, at a location they’d gone on a date on five years ago – which she didn’t immediately remember, which should have been quite the flashing red signal for him. He was all blah blah, I’ve been thinking, I needed to give you more. She replied that the end of their relationship was more about her. He…really wasn’t reading the situation and pushed a ring box towards her. She wouldn’t take it. As he won’t respect her boundaries and she’s got more chemistry with Liam, I think he’s in trouble.
Despite the police’s admonitions, Alison went back to Liam’s for a date. He’s a handsome man, but I spent much of this scene thinking the pattern on the shirt he was wearing was atrocious. Anyway, he showed her the necklace the gang was going to nick in the auction catalogue, claimed the Robin Hood defence that they’d be stealing off the very rich (and nobody would get harmed, except he knows the gang is armed so how can he guarantee that?) He had also learned to sign (an extraordinary amount, which was again straining credibility) as he asked her and her mum to come with him to Brazil or wherever for the rest of their lives, because he was coming into money in the next couple of days, and he emphasised again, stolen from the ultra rich, so that was all right. Alison was very torn. This member of the audience was confused.
