Killjoys 1.9 - Enemy Khlyen

D’avin was doing solo warrants/getting beaten up in Westerley, which made him cross paths with the Main Priest, who wanted him to keep silent about some fancy weapons the resistance had. He was also pushing D’avin, as he had with Johnny in the previous episode, to take a side, seeming fairly sure the killjoys would have to someday soon. But D'avin was too busy putting on fake smiles as Dutch turned up at his new place to return his stuff from Lucy.

Johnny and the helpful hacker (lots of returning faces in this ep) thought that they had now reverse engineered the neural link so that Dutch could do a Khlyen on Khlyen. So she went under (sidenote: in some cool sportswear/underwear) and in her mind saw a fancy computer that looked like gloop in some sort of ceremonial bowl, and then, just as Johnny pulled her out because her body wasn’t able to take it, that Khlyen was on one of the RAC HQs top floors. !!!!

She now wanted answers enough that she was willing to let D’avin in on what they knew and their-barely-a-plan plan to get to Khlyen. We also had her and Johnny reminiscing a little about their first meeting, after she couldn’t sleep after a dream/flashback to Khlyen being protective of her as a child. (There was enough to make you wonder, is HE her father, something I mainly dismissed because it’s so Star Wars, but at some point, we’ll have to learn why her family’s name was dirt at that point.)

D’avin suggested that they use the team’s divorce (their word) as a reason for them to get into RAC HQ with a few contraband items, like the undetectable pulse weapon D’avin had got from the Westerley resistance. They got the attention of a higher up who has previously appeared on the show, suspiciously wondering what they were up to. He okayed the split, D’avin set off the pulse weapon so that Dutch could get up to level 71 and Johnny could get to the plasma computer, but he got caught after they split. They were in contact via an intermittent secret comms link. The manager took a chance to ‘interrogate’ D’avin with no cameras watching, though he mainly seemed to be enquiring after rumours.

Khlyen was waiting for Dutch, but she’d realised that she was his weakness, and injected herself with poison to try to get some answers out of him. Mainly, Khlyen was condescending about her questions, though he said that he’d returned to her life after she took on a level 5 kill warrant, because he’d felt that that showed she was ready for something. She did surprise him by revealing that the poison had been a fake.

Johnny got encrypted data about Khlyen from this advanced computer, but when he started stealing some plasma, alarms went off. The brothers reached Lucy, but only a manual override could get Lucy off the HQ. Dutch volunteered to stay and do it, to the Jaqobis’ chagrin, but she’d programmed Lucy for this eventuality. She then got attacked by the manager, who no longer believed they were on the same side as killjoys. Big mistake on his part, for Khlyen took care of him and (in the protective surrogate father way) took care of Dutch by carrying her away, tying a tourniquet to stem the bleeding and sending her back to Westerley (although that wasn’t clear at the time.) Oh, and he said he was level 6. Unlike the characters, I had obviously assumed level 6 was a real thing.

At Westerley, Johnny was failing to decrypt the file about Khlyen. When Dutch turned up, he rushed off to fetch Pawter. D’avin was angsty. Dutch lectured him for wanting to fight for her because she didn’t need it, which, yeah, but he’s a big brother who feels guilty for leaving his younger brother behind and a soldier to boot.

Oh, and the Westerley Company bigwig decided to arrest the Priest in public, even though the latter warned him his was setting a match to the fuel of the resistance.

So, ‘team awesome force’ are back to being a team, even if it’s not official. It’s not clear how long Khlyen has been RAC, but he was strongly hinting that RAC wasn’t what Dutch thought it was. There was much about who Dutch really is and her complicated feelings about her surrogate father.
