[personal profile] shallowness
When the big crisis point came, what I really appreciated was the sense of inevitability, that of course Alison would have done what she did, likewise Liam, Braden and Ben the cop who didn’t rate Alison, wanted to prove himself (and did know there was likely to be a gun.) And even if Alison hadn’t figured it out and turned up, Liam’s claim that nobody would have got hurt was disproved, because Braden had a gun, was frustrated by the lack of contact, and the bodyguard, at least, would have been shot anyway (because his boss was a princess.)

It started with Alison not knowing what to do and reaching out to her dad – I’d noticed John Bishop was in the credits, and lo, it was him. Maybe I'm getting inured, it was less weird than when he was in 'Fearless'. Her dad the drug dealer (claiming it was only weed), who could sign and seemed to be wearing a wedding ring. In fairness, his advice was for her to do what she knew was right, and as she said then, she knew people could get hurt (something would-be Robin Hood Liam was deluding himself about. Although that would be Liam who hadn’t grown up with loving parents.)

So, she told the police what she knew about the timeline, and they stepped up. We’d already seen the inspector visit a widow who’d been widowed by one of the gang’s previous crimes, reminding us of why he was driven. Ashleigh was getting grief over her divorce, Ben was noticing, although Ashleigh stopped judging him for his affair, taking the view that it was better not to stay in a loveless marriage. They needed the CPS to agree to a conspiracy charge based on what they had, Alison's latest intel swung it, and then booked armed police to go to the vault.

Liam had overheard Alison talking to the police and asked her to meet him, which meant ducking out of the van he’d been working in, much to Hulk’s displeasure, as they were close to going for it. He pressed her about trust, knowing she’d broken his, but by pushing so hard, raised her suspicions, and she turned to her ex for advice. Could Liam have hacked her phone? He had a looksee and saw that he’d linked her hearing aids to her phone (is that a thing? We’d certainly seen that Liam could track her, which is a thing through the phone.) Suddenly her conversation with him and her dad, where she was both signing and vocalising just above a whisper, took on a new light.

She also had a bit of a realisation by flashback, which I didn’t initially follow, about seeing Liam be all techy IN THE HOTEL. The detectives had reached the vault, where it was all quiet and the staff were being obstructive until the inspector (or is it chief inspector?) pressed and it turned out the necklace wasn’t there, thanks to Miss Joshi having ordered its removal that very morning.

Alison had been trying to get messages (via other people’s phones) to Ashleigh, and finally did so: she thought the robbery would take place at the hotel. She was closest to it, Ben was closer than his bosses and was sent that way, and they booked another team of armed police to go there.

At the hotel, Miss Joshi was posing for a photo shoot, asking impatiently for the necklace. Liam, Braden and the driver pulled in the back in a hotel branded van. Liam was on hacking duties, i.e. opening doors and watching CCTV, Braden was sent in with advice not to be himself as he pretended to be room service. Miss Joshi was based in The Suite by the time the necklace was brought in there. On his way in, Braden was warned about Miss Joshi’s attitude by the poor bodyguard who’d be shot. And then Liam set off some smoke bombs to set off the fire alarm…

Alison let Ashleigh know she’d arrived at the hotel, totally ignored any advice about staying put and rushed in. A staff member did not listen to the deaf woman trying to tell him that a robbery was going on and the fire alarm was just a cover. The Joshi party left the suite, assuming that the door would lock and the necklace would be safe, except Braden was hiding behind a door, about to exchange it for a fake.

Liam saw Alison, and that the bodyguard was being sent back to retrieve the necklace because Miss Joshi had petulantly decided that she wanted it now. He guided Braden to drop it down a laundry ‘shute, but then started shutting everything down, left the van and went into the hotel himself.

Ben arrived, knew that the armed police were several minutes away, volunteered to go in, looking for Alison and see what was what. Liam and Alison had a bit of an argument, Braden got antsy, burst out of hiding, waved his gun around to shoot the bodyguard and Ben, who’d identified himself as police. Liam instinctively protected Alison with his body, Braden ran off, Liam let Alison go, saying he was sorry, but not sorry (I think, we saw it again in flashback, and that’s what I thought he said.) She was all about Ben, who was bleeding from a gunshot wound in the abdomen, wanting Liam to call an ambulance, but no, he was running for the bottom of the ‘shute.

Which we realised had always been his plan, double-crossing the gang.

Cut to a traumatised Alison being led through the police station, seeing her mum, Ben’s mistress/colleague, and eventually being interviewed under caution. They had a BSL interpreter there (but not a lawyer?) It looked as though her hearing aids had been removed.

To her surprise, the police were hostile, one person dead, their colleague (who went in of his own volition) in surgery, and Alison and her changing stories suddenly extremely dubious. She answered honestly, that she had cared about Liam, that she had wavered about what to do, but that working with them and seeing that innocents really could get hurt had tipped the balance. She also told them about him hacking her hearing aids, which the male cop bought, but it still felt like she was in trouble, an innocent was dead and the necklace had been stolen, although the gang had been outplayed.
