Strictly Halloween week/week 6
Nov. 2nd, 2025 04:15 pmWatched liveish, hence the posting now.
Being in drag must have scrambled Anton’s brain, because he went off the wrong way in the judges’ bop and was last to take his seat. Overall, the dancers’ costumes looked better than they could have been, although Vito as a bunny did not look quite as I imagined.
Opening up: Vicky and Kai doing a ghostly American smooth. Well, she was in white again. Good effort. I thought there could have been more smoothness. The judges stuck to the ‘improving’ narrative, even if her score finally stopped improving.
Magician!Ellie would be dancing a tango with Rabbit!Vito. There were some nice moments, but the bob tail on Vito’s derriere emphasised how much he had to crouch because of the height difference. The shortness of her arms didn’t help her have the required tension in her arms either. Some of the judges’ comments were confusing.
George and Alexis would be doing the cha cha as a (fetchingly dark) woodsman and evil queen. She didn’t let him dance for ages, and I wasn’t sure what the narrative was because he was concentrating too much to smile (did she stick out her tongue at him in rehearsals or was it trying to get him to lighten up on the night?) And then the ending was messing abaht with the judges, but it was a clean routine. Mostly positive comments and notes for improvement.
If La Voix gets the post-TessnClaud presenting gig, I will drop this show. A solid third of a man dressed up as a woman’s ‘comedy’ being slagging off actual women for how they look is not my cup of tea.
They were doing an Alice in Wonderland Queen of Hearts paso to big music – a rock take on Beethoven’s fifth. Maybe it was the theatricality (and an assist from the dress, while Aljiaz looked great) but that was their best routine. The judges saw a marked improvement, but I was howling ‘STOP TALKING/SHUT UP!’ at Chris.
Next up, Lewis and Katya were doing a couples choice. The VT mentioned the Billy Elliot of it all (on a night when Layton was in the studio.) I guess the style was theatre jazz. It was a BARNSTORMER. I loved the jazzy take on ‘Creep’ and the whole Underworld night club concept. The zany, off energy of the dancing and tricks was perfect. Total energy match between the couple. Katya would namecheck others for helping her with the choreography. But quite rightly, even Craig reached for the 10 paddle, because that was the routine of the series so far.
Siren!Balvinder and sailor!Julian would be doing a rumba, and she was not bad, but I wanted her to go bigger, to really be the powerful siren. I wished they’d done something (at least with the lights) when there was the shift in the song – I really liked this take on the song, which like ‘Creep’ is so specific. The end was really good. At least she looked beautiful. The judges said ‘keep going’ but will the public let them? Like, they got a higher score than Ellie and Vito, but I doubt they’re as popular.
Harry and Karen were doing an intergalactic American smooth. I thought it could have done with more flow and less gapping, but the lifts worked well. There was a mistake, so they got 26. Oh dear.
Karen and Carlos would perform a Peaky Blinders Argentine Tango, and the high concept actually worked. It was a fight of a dance, both in suits, switching lead. She mostly matched him for energy, and her speed and leg work were impressive. I sided with the judges who gave it a 9, but that was definitely the best AT so far, (and clearly Karen is happier in trousers/shorts than glammed up.)
Dancing a devilish salsa were Alex and Johannes (her first lifts.) She moves like a dream, and that means her confidence when dancing is deserved i.e. she’s not faking it to make it. It was such a fun routine. I liked what Motsi said about her doing her own thing while Jo Jo did his.
Following that were Little Red Riding Hood Amber and Wolfy Nikita doing a post-dance-off Viennese Waltz, and we’d already learned she was nervous about closing the show. One of the more balletic dances and it suited her. Never mind that she was immediately following Jo Jo’s take on a red hood and that Nikita’s wig was ridiculous. The red of her dress popped because of what they did with the colouring. The continuous movement and her increasing ferocity as Red were great. Shirley whinged that it wasn’t a proper Viennese Waltz, but as Nikita said, that was on him.
They ended up being the third couple to get 35, and the top of the leaderboard was insanely high scoring. I was able to vote – ooh, so we have five votes – and voted once for Amber and Nikita, George and Alexis, and Lewis and Katya, and twice for Alex and Johannes. (I nearly voted for Karen and Carlos, and would admit to the vote for George being for all the past weeks, really.)
