The Better Sister - 1.7 Back From Red

This opened with Ethan explaining why he’d thought Chloe had killed Adam with a flashback where he saw Adam physically abuse her and her yelling she’d kill him if he hurt her again. As Chloe said, fair interpretation, but she hadn’t killed Adam.

Who had was the question the cops had to answer, as they reinvestigated the case. This led to finding out that the doorman had shouted at Adam at a bar on his last day, because he too knew about the Chloe beating. But he had an alibi for the murder. We also saw Lady Cop talk to a counsellor(?) about her anger issues, which had also emerged previously. After she gave Nikky a courtesy call (and picked up a cigarette she’d been smoking and stubbed to get DNA), Nikky and her potential fancyman, fellow addict Ken, followed her. Unlike us, they didn’t get to see her talking to the suspect she’d put in a wheelchair (it was muddied, he’d tried to kill her, but she’d injured him worse.) But they got an idea of their strange relationship.

Chloe went to visit her fancyman, who was talking to Ethan’s lawyer, with a real friends who’d used to be more vibe. Mainly from her, as she chided him for falling for a married woman again. When they were left alone, he really wasn’t impressed with Chloe after she’d used him, he was suspended from his job and fielding calls from his mother, so he told her to go away.

She and Ethan returned to the city, picked up mail, which included, er, Adam’s ashes, leading to Ethan tossing them from the balcony while saying a complicated goodbye. He did then want to throw away his knight’s costume, so it seemed like he was working through his issues. But a new one came up…

Chloe had visited Katherine, who floated the idea of her and Nikky writing a book about what had happened together. Chloe was already seeing how much Adam had stolen from Nikky, but this would mean letting her sister into her professional sphere. She was also warned to stop running from Bill (Adam’s boss), so she turned up at a bar to meet him. It was a spiky meeting, because she’d realised that Adam’s firm had deleted Gentry’s files from Adam’s computer.

The male cop turned to the FBI agent, who we knew had been paying Chloe’s fancyman a visit, because he’d been talking to the feds about Gentry, but was now no longer willing to co-operate. The Fed’s temper made another showing (he and Lady Cop should clash) with the fancyman, not the male cop. Oh, and the cops had learned that Nikky was in touch with Adam’s mother in Ohio, who was still alive (and I remembered what we’d seen when we first met Nikky.)

But among the post that Chloe now turned to was an icky DVD about the sisters and a police report Ethan had requested about what had happened when he was a baby. The findings revealed that there had been no water in his body, he hadn’t drowned, but there was a cocktail of drugs as well as booze within Nikky. Chloe realised, also in part because of a detail that the three of them had just been discussing that morning (CONVENIENT!), that Adam had lied. She had a shouty encounter with his ghost and then we saw a flashback of him mixing drugs into Nikky’s drink.

Nikky came to Chloe, and in a scene that I had to rewind because they were mumbling, it emerged that she’d found this out a couple of years ago, and also that Adam and Chloe weren’t giving Ethan the ‘picture perfect’ or ‘better’ life she’d comforted herself he was getting. Chloe wanted to know what she was saying…er, that she killed him, I guess.

It was all very melodramatic, with us getting a richer picture of the lady cop and her story. Obviously, the narrative had to shift now that Ethan had been cleared, but the healing for the family narrative has been warped.
