The Mindy Project 1.18 Danny’s Friend

Funny. Clearly Stevie would be no match for Mindy, and his trying to intimidate her turning into a date was especially funny. A total missing scene that should be ficced when presumably they went over to Danny’s for him to change after the cake fight before going to Staten Island. I liked that there was enough edge to Rachel that you didn’t blame Mindy for being suspicious of the pie. And the fights were hilariously terrible – for some reason, I really liked that Morgan took Rachel’s torso and Danny her legs when getting her off Mindy.

I’ve held off from posting about Nashville, because I thought there were 22 episodes in the season, not 21 – which does seem a random number, although, in hindsight, given the DRAMA of episode 21, of course it was a finale. As I found out when I tried to catch up with a non-existent episode this morning.

Nashville 1.20 A Picture from Life’s Other Side

Very dramatic! It was nice to have Scarlett at the Opry (especially how Rayna basked in it) although it was blatant that the actress was singing live and we were hearing a pre-record that didn’t synch.

Otherwise, oh Jolene! I was almost surprised that they didn’t have Juliette’s discovery of her mama close the episode, but seeing Juliette’s lonely reaction to the news story was powerful, and having Maddie find out she’s not Teddy’s birth daughter (and all because he freaked out) just as Rayna was asking for his trust on this issue tied in thematically. We will be seeing Scarlett’s mother in season 2, I presume.

Also, Scarlett was spot on for what she told Gunnar and how she got to the root of what was going on with him. I was a bit dubious about the time and the place she chose to do so, but then, she could say ‘look at where you are’.

It’s going to be a good contrast between her and her wholesome authenticity and Will (closeted, ambitious and the kind of guy who thinks that the appropriate response to ‘I’m depressed’ is ‘Let’s go risk our lives’) on Rayna’s label. (Carmack having been signed on for s2.)

I liked the reprises – Scarlett singing the song that she auditioned with, the James sisters doing their party piece – no wonder Teddy freaked, I bet he can’t do anything musical – and the same effect of Rayna ‘hearing’ the production added when Will auditioned for her.

I can’t be bothered to care about the politics, because it’s a weak area for the show. Now Deacon and little Daphne are the only ones who don’t know about the parentage scandal.

Oooh, Rayna’s home truths about respect and Juliette’s attitude (poor Emily and her Stockholm syndrome) were great. I’m not going to write too much about Juliette, but I think they handle her well, as in we know where she’s coming from and why she’s such a trainwreck and everything that she is. I mean, if Avery had a tape of what she’s said, he could sue her for sexual harassment as his boss. And she would deserve that, unlike the blackmail and FINDING HER DEAD MOTHER. I know she was pushing Jolene away, and that was the only sacrificial way her poor mother could see out of the situation, but nobody deserves to walk in on that.

1.21 I’ll never get out of this world alive

And the drama ramps up again! I thought they did a good job with how big a deal Maddie’s paternity was for, well, everyone affected.

Drunk!Deacon certainly lived up to the build up.

Poor Juliette who didn’t know how to grieve or how she was grieving. I was glad for her that all the people who rallied around for her did – but few of them did it for Jolene. It took me a while to realise that she hadn’t registered from Jolene’s phone message what she’d done, but I’m glad she found out.

The conversation with Rayna was a bit of a stretch – I don’t quite think the two women’s relationship was such for them to talk like that. But, although hearing a mother tell Juliette she was good enough was powerful, Rayna has never been a mother figure for her. I think that choice was more about mama Rayna in all her failings having another perspective on her relationship with Maddy and having the two main characters connect instead of the likely truth of the situation.

Of the songs, with all the stuff going on in the montage and acting face, it was a shame about Panettier’s voice at the end. (Hey, having Britton sing opposite a proper singer didn’t do much to showcase her singing voice either.) I liked Scarlett’s duet, but hated her cheating vocally on Gunnar with Avery, especially when the latter did a falsetto. That’s just wrong.

Having said that, while it’s good he listened to her ultimatum and started to change, Gunnar, I think she wanted you to stick around and work at things, not propose to her – ESPECIALLY when she’d witnessed her uncle be a mean and nasty drunk. But hey, we had to have a marriage proposal and a car crash to ratchet up the drama. (ETA: finish the season.)

Juliette wanting to sing so badly at the Bluebird because her mama wanted it was a rather brilliant character moment.

How to describe my feelings for the show? I’ve quite enjoyed it, although I didn’t love how they went for the second half of the season with Scarlett/Gunnar, which was what I most passionately cared about, although I like Scarlett’s journey. I enjoy the music (much more than I thought I would), which is used really well within the show, and I appreciate the drama, but I’ve never felt compelled to watch the next episode (like I’m itching to see the next episode of Top of the Lake or how there is no question that I’ll watch Once Upon a Time). My attitude has always been more ‘I’ll catch up with it eventually.’ It might help if More4 air season 2 in a 9pm slot - but not The Good Wife's. I enjoy the dynamics that having two female leads brings out. Also, I would love to see some Juliette/Liam happening at some point.
