The Assassin - 1.5
Feb. 11th, 2026 08:26 amBack to the action, as Edward and Jasper ran from the blonde assassin into an underground car park, which is when she decided to call for back up. Good job Julie followed them. Edward had to shoot someone dead in self-defence, and then found a lady (Marie) in a car was offering to whisk them off somewhere – well, it turned out to be only him, leaving Julie with Jasper and no son. And the assassin’s phone, so when Ezra called to check in on the Athens hit job, seeing conflicting news on his phone, Julie threatened him as the man who’d arranged for someone to shoot at her son and her without knowing he was Ezra.
Luka decided to return to the story and went back to Damian’s place, where the human cockroach was still alive, if badly in need of medical attention. Instead, driven by his memory of his dead fellow islanders, Luka the butcher was willing to use his knife skills for new purposes (based on this ep, he is just a butcher, then). This implied goriness did lead to him finding the laptop, so when he got in touch with Julie, she agreed to meet, eager to get any clues that might help her find Edward, because Jasper’s report about what had happened to him was very vague.
Meanwhile in France, Kayla had read the letter, her mother’s suicide note. She claimed she’d made copies (I presumed these would be pictures on her phone), and was not very happy with her father. Aaron Cross eventually linked the bad thing he and his missus had done to Chantaine.
Marie and Edward talked, he was getting suspicious, she told him about his father, and he was baited, hook line and sinker, to let her drive him miles out of town, supposedly to meet Julie at another safehouse. They had to face a checkpoint, manned by a sole officer, so Edward got bundled into the boot. Marie claimed to be her sister’s birthing partner – I got distracted thinking she’d have done better to claim it was her daughter or niece – and thought she was going to get waved through, until the officer wanted to check the boot. He got shot for that. I appreciated that Marie had a silencer.
Later, Edward had realised that he wasn’t going to meet up with Julie, but was trying to find out more about his father. Marie gave him titbits, including a very weird segue about a character from Attack From Titan and pulled into a garage. He started looking around the car and saw her notebook – well, he is a journalist. The pictures were somewhat disturbing and quite a few were of him. Creeped out, he started questioning her, pointed out that she’d slipped up on his father’s name (I hadn’t noticed) and ran off.
Kayla handed Ezra the suicide note. He did not react quite as she had, but went to their father, saying he could quite see why he didn’t want this to come out, but had to admit that he’d ordered a hit on Jasper, only it hadn’t gone so well. His father gave Ezra his opinion of him with both barrels, and it wasn’t inaccurate, but Ezra was obviously upset.
I don’t really buy that Aaron would overdose himself after all that, even if his son was a disappointment and his more ethical daughter was disappointed in him.
Julie had found out that Jasper had been bluffing a lot, he only knew the name Chantaine, not what it stood for. Fortunately for Jasper’s survival, Luka called her to let her know the famed laptop was passworded to the hilt, so she took IT guy Jasper along with her to meet up with Luka.
At Luka’s mother’s house, which added a little welcome humour as she went full Mediterranean mama, assuming Julie was Luka’s girlfriend and chiding him for letting her be too thin. Actually, Julie found Luka and his mother’s interaction difficult because she didn’t know where her son was, and their relationship was and had always been more fraught. Luka and she definitely shared a moment.
Jasper tried to threaten them into giving him money or he’d destroy the data on the (ancient) laptop. It didn’t go so well for him, although he would eventually be let loose and given directions to Damien’s place to lie low.
Fortunately, Kayla had got in touch with Julie, having learned that Ezra had put a hit on Jasper without caring that Edward would be in the vicinity. Kayla cared about it, though. Her knowledge of what Chantaine was helped Julie find the relevant information on the laptop – it was a hit she’d done, a hit ordered by the Crosses, who had decided to get rid of the arms dealer who’d helped their company financially. As you do.
We saw Edward, very focused on a payphone, getting injected to sleep by Marie, who would croon a lullaby at him, drive to an airfield, take a picture of him lying prone and send it to Julie.
Who had been telling Kayla on speakerphone, Luka and us about how she’d been the assassin sent to Spain to kill this Jean-Luc, but then found out his family was there – and it seemed to be a mother and son. So, the pregnancy test result flashback was a misdirect, because Julie rescued Edward after killing his father, and Marie may well be his mother.
Quite the reversal, and not the theory I’d been building up about what was going on!
