Once Upon a Time 1.16 The Miller’s Daughter
Rose McGowan – your face, woman!? She’s gone all Michael Jackson, which is SURELY why they hired her to play young(ish) Cora (although having her be older worked well for her antagonism for Eva - who grew up to be Snow’s Unimpeachable Mother, yes? - which is fascinating.) Once I had got used to the face*, I did enjoy her.
This episode followed on very closely from last week’s and made me feel that I hadn’t been paying nearly enough attention to the whole of season 2. But like the whole season, I felt like some bits worked better than others.
I would have loved to have some scenes or a webisode where Ruby is babysitting Henry, because he’s got a lot of issues to work through and she is being wasted. So, you know he could be talking about how Emma lied, he has a dad and a grandfather and his birth family is ranged against his adoptive family and New York was cool, and Ruby would be listening, but she'd also be picking up something mysterious/fishy/dangerous with her wolfy hearing...
I noticed that it was Espinson writing, so I wasn’t surprised when we had the phone call to Belle, although with a reminder of True Love, I didn’t get why Rumpel was so desperate to know if youngish!Cora had loved him. Either she was lying or was it that he didn’t love her that was the issue? I rather think it was all a bit too rushed.
Youngish!Cora was almost sympathetic at times - she was unfairly treated and she was far from meek about it. I also liked that she bargained back and got her way with Rumpelstiltskin. (I did panic for ten minutes that Regina was Rumpelstiltskin’s.)
Oh Snow no. Sometimes, you really should listen to Charming. Exquisite ironies, because Snow was right in pointing out to Regina that Cora wanted power the most (I hope they’ll have stopped making Regina stupid now) and that her lack of heart was to blame, but the scene where Regina got the mother she’d always wanted and by so doing lost her was excruciating. Regina's face! Cora's words!
(I don’t think Emma or Henry will be impressed, SNOW.)
I like the way the actor playing Neal brought out his character’s inner child.
I also LOVED Emma’s coat (ooh, and most of the clothes in the southern bit of the Enchanted Forest, beautiful masks). I really do hope that if she has a second she starts to train in magic so that Regina won’t just be able to transport her. In nearly every fight scene where Our Heroes brandish their weapons, I’m hollering for them to turn to the Blue Fairy or something because Cora + Regina = MAGIC, DUH.
So, goodbye then, Cora. I thought you were going to become the Dark One, but you are not and it’s going to be Angry!Regina, and she is going to have some cause because of Snow’s precipitous, compromised actions.
*May all the younger actresses on this show who seem perfectly capable of pulling faces that show me how their characters are feeling take heed.
