Movies seen in February
Mar. 1st, 2026 08:07 amAt the cinema, it was just Crime 101. You could point out that it stars Thor, a Hulk, a Catwoman and a Joker, which tells you something about movies these days. You could also fairly say that it’s very much after Heat (detective hunts a high-end thief in LA), but there’s a different ending. There are echoes of other movies (The Thomas Crowne Affair is referenced in dialogue), I saw a touch of Zodiac in Ruffalo’s cop, who was sometimes rumpled enough that I thought of Columbo too. Keogh’s biker chaos merchant with his bleached blonde hair reminded me of The Place Beyond the Pines, and Hemsworth’s ‘Mike’ puts on shades when he’s wearing a black suit and tie and I was reminded of how terrible Men In Black: International was.
But this is much better. Sure, the way that various characters cross paths (mainly in cars) is a bit much, but the cuts from scenes are really interesting, the characters are well developed and the three main characters are SMRT, the vehicular action (usually not technically car chases) is really good. It was not quite the movie I expected from the trailers (I was hoping Hemsworth’s thief would have some younger man/older woman action with Berry’s insurance person, frankly), but it’s engaging, satisfying and looks pretty stylish all told.
I watched Memento for the first time on TV last night. It’s very early Nolan, but a lot of his preoccupations are present and correct. It’s not quite the film that I thought it would be – I’m impressed that I hadn’t found out more by osmosis over the years, so suffice it to say that we end up in a very different place from when we started. It has a neo-noir feel to it at times. Oh, and I enjoyed it more than Tenet, which I also first saw on TV.
