The Mindy Project - 1.19 My Cool Christian Boyfriend
Well, I didn’t like either Mindy or Casey as they spent time together. Mayhem ensued – predictably – as she went to that women’s prison. I was amused by drill sergeant Morgan (and Betsey for that matter). He was sort of right to be so peeved by their not listening to him, and the line about being the gynaecologist and everyone else being the nurse resonated nicely, although given that he’s...Morgan, I see their points.
Aww to the Mindy and Danny stuff. I’m surprised that no-one around them hasn’t commented on some of it, even if they’re just putting it down to Mindy and Danny getting on each other’s nerves again.
1.20 - I watched it live, so I don't know what the title was
I was a little surprised that this episode followed the last, as in, surprised by the Danny/Alex.
Some pretty good pratfalling from Kaling (not quite up to Miranda Hart standards, but they are high) and well, I totally bought that the character would do all that she did in this episode.
But SO MUCH Mindy/Danny tension, especially in his house. I began thinking ‘are they going to go there? Already?’ They didn’t, but it’s surely salient to point out that while Mindy was congratulating Alex on getting Danny to open up enough to host a party, she really didn’t. It was Mindy opening her big gob as payback. (I’m not saying that Mindy was consciously aware of that or that it was played like that, just that those are the facts.)
I also don’t think that assuming that Danny might have told his girlfriend about his ex-wife was that big a slip, but the fight between them ended at a bad point.
Also, although I mostly agree with Danny about Brendan, I loved the flashback reminding us Danny was turning quite a chaste kiss into something epic in his head.
Jeremy tried to do some business about being jealous of Mindy’s friend in a wheelchair, but he isn’t Mindy, Danny or Morgan, so the show doesn’t care. (Exhibit A: the final scene.)
I went to see RED2 and it totally lived up to my expectations! Three significant women characters (if there hadn’t been, I might be grumbling about the sexist hiring policies of the spy/military agencies on display). BUT there was more awesome Helen Mirren as Victoria (extra awesome because now RED fanvidders will have more footage to play with.) And if Mirren, Malkovitch (and Willis, Hopkins, martial arts geniuses etc) weren’t in the film, Parker might have walked away with it. I really liked that Sarah refused to be bundled off into a safe house by the overprotective boyfriend who'd been getting too domesticated for her, expressed her opinions forthrightly and got in on the action. Frank’s line about giving a kitten fire was exceedingly patronising, and the film showed her developing skills she hadn’t had before and bringing abilities or trying things that no-one else had thought of and getting results. I really liked the focus on relationships – Sarah/Frank; Victora/Ivan giving us just enough to deserve my squee when I saw Brian Cox’s name in the opening credits; and more platonically Frank and Marvin’s etc. Plus there was plenty of cool, dumb, cheesy action.
And hats. Lots of hats, which I appreciate, anyway.
