So, Evie spent a week in the garage, Suze adopted ‘not smothering’ as a catchphrase, Noa moped and Josh stayed away. A bit more focus on the cycling kid, who has been in most every episode. He seems to be into Evie though he pretends to be fascinated by her like she’s Miss Havisham (he reads ‘Great Expectations’ despite being expelled from school.)
Evie emerged on Film Club day, but not to arrange Film Club, which threw her family. Josh turned up, calling them his girls, Suze was hostile and hadn’t had a chance to tell Evie about him. Josh ended up helping Evie clear the garage of props. He saw the envelope from Noa and stuffed it into his pocket.
Josh’s explanation/excuses to Suze amounted to wanting to keep something separate from his mother who might spoil it, but it did seem as though there was a lot of deceit going on and Josh-at-home was deeply unpleasant, while Josh-with-Evie was overweening. Suze wouldn’t let him take the stuff from the garage to the charity shop yet. Furthermore, she and Izzie decided they were not having this and arranged a film club meeting (in the best room) behind Evie’s back.
Evie seemed to be facing her general situation a bit more, talking about having hit rock bottom, getting her mother to admit that they weren’t holding her job open for her and asking about her flat. The three of them were dressed in glad rags. Steph turned up and got to put on a veil. Noa turned up, and he and Evie were polite, with lots of eye-yearning, but not really addressing much. Evie admitted she’d lost his envelope. He claimed he’d just left her his new address in it, and still wouldn’t say anything about his feelings or what had and hadn’t happened.
Suze found this film club thing more fun than she’d expected, with a lot of discussion about who the true soulmates were and the depiction of friendship v. love (thanks for the anvils, but the genders are different, and even though The Wizard of Oz is his favourite film, I think it’s been established that Noa is straight). Suze eventually told Evie and the room about Josh, the general opinion was that he’d been dodgy, but Evie didn’t rush to condemn him or seem to want Noa’s comfort. Suze and Evie were getting a better read on Noa, Suze being horrified to learn that his mother had never told him that she loved him. (Which may help to explain why he can’t really express himself to Evie. Also, textually absent fathers everywhere.) Evie learned more about Steph, although I would say that while sharing about her own wobble that led to a big life change is good as far as it goes, it’s not professional mental health help. Evie doesn’t seem to be any the wiser about the cause of her breakdown, just more open to talking about it.
Izzie decided to go to bed, Suze and Steph to go back to the pub, leaving Evie and Noa alone. He asked her not to make it a big goodbye, so she didn’t, but they were still making eyes at each other. His flatmate was giving him a lift home.
Suze and Steph returned triumphant after karaokeing a very pointed song. They nicely handled Suze’s realisation that she’d been wearing Josh’s coat – he’d left it behind after he’d been more or less driven out of the house. She noticed the envelope and despite it being addressed to Evie, opened it (er, bad drunken choice there, but we’re all dying to know what’s in it.)
