OUAT 2.18 Selfless, Brave and True
I’ve been wanting to know what was happening with August for ages – although I’m left with a few questions after the answers in this episode. I was actually quite touched as the dead, wooden August become the living, little boy Pinnochio, partly because it was instigated by Henry, Emma was getting to be the Hero and Gepetto is touching. It helps that I care more about Emma and her relationship with Henry and Snow than any Emma ship, although I imagine Emma/August shippers were fuming as he was all pro Emma/Neal, all of a sudden, which seemed bizarre given that he broke them up, and then he was turned into a child with no memory of being an adult.
Why did he go from Phuket to Hong Kong for the doctor? I can understand going there to the Dragon specifically, but surely there’d be some medical attention available at Phuket.
Now the Dragon was interesting (if stereotypical), partly because of the echoes of Maleficent and the magician-dragon link the show is going for, partly because of the suggestion he’s not of this world. I wonder if there’s a link between him and Mulan. (Any excuse to bring her back! And yes, I will still whine that it crowds out other developments.)
So ‘Her’ is Tamara, if that’s her real name, and she was very busy this episode with her tazer and making men look stupid – Neal was her dupe, August was very slow in asking ‘why?’ which I was howling at the screen, and over both of them she chooses Owen/Greg? Ethan Embury has a cute face and all, but REALLY?
Regina flirting with him once she'd realised who he was was disturbing. (Not because he was played by Embury, but because she wanted to be his mother.) She may well be telling the truth about his father, and I’m sure we’ll find out in flashback, but obviously he wasn’t going to believe her.
Ooh, and I daresay we’ll find out about Tamara’s grandmother too – it just seems like a lot to be introducing at this stage in the season. The Charmings, Neal and Rumpel and Regina’s stuff has been chuntering along, but now they’ve thrown in a new player with a new dimension to the whole set-up. It feels like a lot. I look forward to Tamara’s interaction with Papa Rumpelstiltskin.
Tying in August’s redemption story with Mary Margaret’s angst was a good touch. Clearly lessons were learned by Emma and Mary Margaret.
I was delighted that they remembered that Mother Superior can do magic in Storybrooke now.
Apparently it’s 10 years since The OC first aired (eek!) and I’ve been thinking, fondly, of it. My ideal show would be two, two and a half seasons long and some things would be ruthlessly cut, but a lot of the ridiculous would stay too. After all, I loved Julie Cooper. And then there was the moment where Taylor Townsend appeared and filled the Taylor Townsend shape gap in the OC’s universe – I knew someone like her had to exist to do all the stuff that Marissa clearly wasn’t. Of course, the heart was the Cohens and Ryan, but there were Mini Coop and Anna and Summer. And they eventually got rid of Marissa (not a fan what with dead-eyed acting and the character’s perpetual downward spirals) and deciding that what Ryan Atwood needed romantically after all the angst was to be in a screwball comedy. Which I loved.
If a cheap set of season 4 DVDs passed me I would grab it like Julie and Kaitlin stole clothes from a charity stall that time.
It aired back in the day when I was writing more. There was loads of fics that I started, but never finished or got to a point where I was happy to post it. Before Taylor, there was Ryan/any-girl-but-Marissa fic – I even tried to write Ryan/Summer, though I never felt it. There was also a fic where Anna was a werewolf and very blase about it to Seth and Ryan's bemusement. There was – I am ashamed of this – a season 3 fic where Taylor goes homicidal and kills Marissa. And then there were a couple of attempted Kaitlin/Luke future fics because I wanted him to have had a relationship with all the Cooper ladies!?!? What DOES all of that say about my psyche?
