shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Avengers Natasha/Bruce)
[personal profile] shallowness
Agents of SHIELD epsiode 4

I thought this was an improvement although eye surgery is a big do not want of a squick, so I stared fiercly at the wall during that. I thought they weaved the problem at hand in better with Coulson's past and present, Skye and Melinda's issues and the whole individual vs. team thing. There were a few bumpy bits - I felt as if we'd missed a big bit from the lorry crashing the van to their return to what is apparently known as the bus now. Bits of it were clunky, but the opening sequence was really effective, Akela was interestingly drawn (although, hello Coulson, here's where a mention of Natasha would have been relevant) - at the end, was I meant to take it that when she closed her eye she saw the SHIELD logo?

Blah blah Coulson's CHANGED = fundamentally altered. Like whoever was behind Akela, we'll find out more as the series goes on.

More interesting is his interaction with Skye and Melinda. My tolerance levels to Skye/Ward are increasing although I spent all the time he was wearing the glasses going 'too tall'. They did suit him, mind. But the twist of the handler being handled was effective. Less so - the nudge nudge final scene. I'd got the whole Clark Kent/Superman nod already, having a girl perv on a guy is just as pervy as the other way around.

I may even be interested enough to wait to see whether they allow Fitz (and Simmonds) to grow up a little.

Then I watched Orphan Black episode 6 Variations under Domestication

Slight change in tone, with a lot of this feeling like French farce, containing torture (by craft implements and stuff lying around the garage) because this is OB, after all as Alison went unhinged. I don't know if I actually believe Donny, because his story doesn't explain away the phone call. And though I loved Sarah standing up for Alison, she glue-gunned him! They clearly have issues.

Though I laughed at the music cues etc, the stakes were still admirably tense, as you were wondering who'd see sleeping Alison when. I wonder if Paul fully believes it yet.

I would like to think Vic would have enough of a sense of survival to go away and stay away, given the grief he brings in his wake, but he's about stupid enough not to. And every time he appears, I'm like 'REALLY, Sarah? Him?'

I love how differentiated the clones are and how much we've got to care for them all, because while I never thought the French girl was a monitor - she was instigating too much, I didn't think she was necessarily going to reciprocate Cassima's crush. I didn't expect the reveal that she was in with Leeke (who is a leetle too much of a familiar type). He'd been so interested in winning Cassima over. I hope she stops to wonder at the name 'the Dyad institute'.

That actor's face is familiar, and there was Eric Johnson.

Despite the fact that I was still quite tense for a lot of it, this was a refreshing change. I'm not saying that I want the show to stay here tonally for too long, and I doubt that it will.

I then switched over for 5USA to see what looked like a new episode of Castle all right (or new on me), although it was still hitting the familiar beats, so I find I'm not bothered about missing it. It's the sort of show I'd watch if it wasn't clashing with something else, because it's entertaining, but I don't love how they're handling the will they, won't they and I've already got The Mentalist doing much the same thing. Interesting and telling that five have shunted it to this channel.
