shallowness: Fred and Ginger dancing in foregroud, him in tails, her in a dark gown, background a white circle (moon or spotlight) (Fred and Ginger dancing)
[personal profile] shallowness
Busy weekend, busy week so far too.

I tried to catch up with Strictly. I am going to mainly talk about the dances, because there was fast-forwarding and buffering and things not playing properly because everyone else in the neighbourhood was online at the time.

Sophie did, thank goodness, seem to sell the dance more. If you can’t look like you’re having fun when doing the quickstep by this point, you shouldn’t be on the show, and she’s better than that. Picky, picky Craig, although I did notice one weird bit with her arm. Loved the colour of her dress.

Speaking of clothes, or clithers as I first typed: Anya! Perhaps the woman needs to wear catsuits or the simplest gowns possible (on Strictly terms), but for once I thought Bruce did the nice thing in the way he talked to her. I thought Patrick started a little safely, but considering the incident too, overall, it was pretty good for a male samba.

Ben’s American Smooth was one of his better dances for me, certainly showing he’s learned and developed. Very dramatic lifts as per Kristina.

I spent a lot of Ashley’s paso chuckling at Ola, clearly inspired by 80s rock videos, but I liked his shaping and thought the judges were mostly right in the points that they praised.

Fiona’s American Smooth lowered the standard a bit, a bit stop-start and a bit stiff as a whole.

The old people scoring Abbey were hilarious. I did notice the gapping, compared with Sophie and Brendan’s quickstep, but these two are infectiously charming. I don’t quite see that Darcy could give a 10 if she mentioned faults, and I wasn’t expecting 10s, more like something in between the judges’ extremes, but maybe the content was tougher than I could pick up on? Or three of the judges decided ‘Why not, it’s Blackpool?’

I had to battle the computer (the computer won) to see Mark’s dance - it was same problem with the opening group dance, which I am really gutted about, because I think it would have been joyous. And if I have a second, I might try to watch it again, but I’d also like to see Torvill and Dean doing Strictly for Children in Need). Didn’t seem to be much jive content, but it was fun.

So, Susanna’s paso. The second I saw that Kevin was dancing full out and that it was traditional, well, I knew the challenge was set. I thought she totally raised her game to match him in intensity, and I couldn’t fault the steps, the shaping or the drama. What did Craig see? Anyway, she upped her game to 10 territory.

Also, Tess, she was clearly verklepmt after doing the dance and emotional as she talked to you, getting three tens was obviously going to affect her badly. They’d better watch that she doesn’t faint and all. (And yes, I did note the promotion of Kevin, which I don’t mind, because I think she almost matches him in attention grabbing. Clearly they are very popular from the audience reaction. And I have written more about them than anyone else.)

Natalie’s to cameras seemed weary, which made one worry, but the second Artem walked through that doorway, I got very excited. That was such a stylish Charleston, and the choreography had that gorgeous modern twist he puts in and, with Natalie, a dancer who could execute it beautifully.

Again, one wonders what Craig saw to knock the marks off. I’m not bitching, I think there was a bit of over-marking going on from the other three and Bruce’s line about not being fair was harsh. Craig is consistent. (Having seen Monday’s It Takes Two, my curiosity is satisfied.)

I thought that the back-up dancers were a much better idea than props.

Results show – I liked the idea of the opening number, but again, couldn’t see it properly. I would have fast-forwarded Rieu – I hate the clothes his orchestra wears – until I saw the dancers come on. How lovely to see Anton partnering such an expressively beautiful dancer.

Well done, producers, for torturing Kristina some more.

I thought it was a fair bottom two and, like Fiona I was surprised she’s made it so long. I wanted Mark and Iveta to stay, because I liked them more. And Fiona’s dress was uglier the more I looked at it. But I could see the argument for keeping either. I only realised that it was pro partner against pro partner after the results, although it’s only on this series and for the show.

I watched the first episode of The Sound of Musicals, which didn't seem sure what kind of programme it wanted to be, warts and all picture of one production or a puff piece. It gave us a glimpse of what went into the production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with the themese of high risk because of exepctations and big money going in, working with machinery and children. Lots of language that you hoped they weren't using in front of said children.
