The Sound of Musicals 1.4 Hits and Misses
As ever, the episode's content was loosely linked to the episode title, it could be just as much about casting as the previous episodes.
Two shows were focused upon, Top Hat, which was winning acclaim but not getting the numbers in its second year and Thriller Live, which did well timing-wise out of the death of Michael Jackson (I sound callous? So did the show.) There we watched kids with lovely voices try out and saw a bit of the journey of one of them to get to play the young Michael Jacskon, and in counterpoint an adult who was on trial to embody the rock aspect of Jacko. Add in a dash of talking heads (although did we ever get the gen on the Mafioso quote?) and...I still feel that this was a puffed up advert for a lot of shows, mainly, with a few hints of more interesting or revelatory shows lying inside it.
I’m trying to watch as much of all this week’s It Takes Two as possible as it’s the last week.
