Top 10 films of 2013

For context, I went to the cinema 38 times and saw 37 films, watching Iron Man Three twice. This is way down on 2009 and 2011.
Les Misèrables – monumental and emotional. Anne Hathaway made me cry, not sniffle or choke up, no, she made me cry. For what it's worth, I think this is the best Hugh Jackman's ever been on screen.
Zero Degrees Thirty – didn’t shy away from being difficult, not so much to follow what was going on, but in the questions it rose and didn’t answer. Chastain was robbed (I love Lawrence, that she owned Silver Linings Playbook, but still) and, arguably, so were Bigelow and her team.
Lincoln – classy, intelligent political thriller around a towering performance, well supported.
Robot & Frank – simply a great story in a just-around-the-corner future, with a delightful turn from Langella. More details here, because I think this is one that passed people by.
Iron Man Three – the film that I compared all summer films with and found them less fun and, well, good.
The Way, Way Back – a witty and sympathetic gem. It involved Jim Rash (co-writing and co-directing) and Allison Janney (being hilarious). More details here because, again, I don't think it got the audience it deserved.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – thrilling horrifying, moving. Oh, KATNISS.
Gravity – awe-inspiring, with some of the most scorching images of the year, (So glad it lived up to the hype.)
Frozen – this film made me so happy.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – part of the tapestry of Jackson's adaptations with scale that takes your breath away and small moments that catch at your heart.

Happy new year!
