Sherlock 3.1 The Empty Hearse

Entertaining enough, but hmm, we don’t know how he did it really and truly for sure, do we? Was the version Sherlock told Anderson of how he faked it the truth – did it cover the 25 people in the homeless network? Like I said with regard to the mini episode, I liked Anderson having gone deep into conspiracy theories and set up a discussion group (oh hi, sop to slashers from that girl off My Mad Fat Diary, among several other winks and nods). But Sherlock clinging to the mystery for John is one thing, we the viewers would like some confirmation. Well, I would, and I didn't even spend that much time think about it.

Er, how many times did they film Cumberbatch doing that fall?

At least it looks like they will follow up the question of who kidnapped John and warned Sherlock and why. Even before we saw the mysterious guy with glasses, I presumed it was a third party who wanted to warn Sherlock about the underground network plot.

I didn’t think all that much of the secret underground station that wasn’t, under the Palace of Westminister, going off on November the fifth as the big mystery. It felt a bit ‘seen it before’.

The episode was more about incidental pleasures – it was funny, from the reveal of the Holmes parents (apparently Cumberbatch's RL parents!) to John’s reactions. I like Mary, how she isn’t threatened by Sherlock and, clearly, set up the most irritating patients for John to see the next day. I took Sherlock’s assessment of her and response as an admission that she’s a good fit for John. It doesn’t look like she’s going to get in the way of the investigating, although we’ll see how that works after a few more cases.

I felt willing to accept Molly’s fiancé and that she was moving on (and leaving the show? This made me sad, as if they couldn’t cope with having too many women around) after her day following Sherlock around, until we saw the Sherlock clone (snerk) and there was that little moment with Lestrade. (I hope there’s fic about Molly and Lestrade bumping into each other over the last two years that assimilates canon, because I’m hopeless.) Although I did approve of Sherlock giving her a peck rather than a snog (in the Hollywoodised scenario), because it was kinder.

It’s been emphasised that Sherlock has learned the value of companionship – of friends. Learned it in a way Moriarty couldn’t, because he underestimated Molly, which was re-emphasised in this episode. Learned it enough that he knew better than Mycroft. (Speaking of: ANTHEA!!! The one big thing the second series missed.) I liked how, despite his obtuseness in many regards, Sherlock could hear John’s voice in his head, mocking him, making him more human. Aww.

So, there was stuff that I enjoyed as we resettled into the groove, but the show didn’t quite pick up where it left off in quality and impact, and being clever ‘everyone’s a critic’ about it doesn’t help.

Totally agreed with the consensus about John’s moustache, though.

I then caught up with Atlantis series 1.12 Touched by the gods: part 2

So, it was all bundling merrily, if predictably along – I am pretty sure the writers had just been watching Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Ariadne was still in my bad books, I didn't even like when she was randomly sly in faking her injury also why does the Orcale think it’s okay for Ariadne to rule but not her father?, Hercules and Pythagoras were bantering away and BAM!

My theory that Jason’s father was a god and the Oracle his birth mother went boom. I liked how Hannah played it, and even with the hardly subtle ‘touched by the gods’ repetition, I did not see THAT coming. Perhaps I should be less harsh towards Ariadne and Jason. My excute is that I was really wedded to that theory.

I don’t quite understand if Pasiphae ‘gave’ Tychon leprosy (magically? To get rid of him? Is he of Royal blood too?) and he then took Jason to the future, to a time when leprosy is curable (but not magic leprosy maybe.) Eh, this is a rabbit hole like any thinking about why they bothered to send Jason to our time.

Parrish also did some fabulous acting and got a grade A glower from Siddig when Minos discovered what she’d done to his daughter.

So, Atlantis WILL RETURN. I hope they get their act together about a few things. But it's been entertaining.

I really didn't watch a lot of Christmas TV, but then, I rarely do. Well, I caught bits of quizzes.
