shallowness: HP films' Minerva reads the Daily Prophet (Minerva reads)
[personal profile] shallowness
Whoa. From Borgen’s Katrine’s Ravn turning up as a Mupert Rumdock-alike onwards, that was much, much more like it, full of twists that I didn’t see coming (I must admit I had needed other people to point out to me that Mary was not who she seemed to be because of skip codes etc as I’d been taking her at face value, although I’d clocked that she was manipulative) and some that I did. But mainly I fell for the red herrings, for instance, I thought it was the glasses providing an electronic version of - how did Molly put it 'Sherlock’s great gifts'?

I know Janine got to mention bees, but I am starting to wonder if they’re going to go further with Sherlock/Molly...surely not. Out of fic, I tend to be anti that, because she deserves better, and I tend to be unconvinced by fic. And I think that my attitude towards the slapping of Sherlock in this ep is so unPC that we won’t go there. However, the astringency of Molly in the real world crossed over to his head¬ Will Janine be able to transition from being entirely Sherlock’s dupe to friends? And although it was chiefly to get close to Magnusson, Sherlock surely partly went after her to prove that he could after the end of the last episode.

May I also admit that, as per the end of the last episode, really, the most emotional I got was over the brothers Holmes? It surprised me too, but I feel it’s apt that it was they who were referencing fighting dragons (see also Spike and Lynda from Press Gang).

This is not to say that John being Sherlock’s pressure point (and by extension Mary and their child, actually) and JOHN/MARY was not touching, or that Molly and co. appearing in Sherlock’s mind palace to help him to survive didn’t make me melt. Well, Moriarty was a twisted projection of his brain, but still. (Um, has there been an Inception crossover in Sherlock’s brain yet?)

However the domestic scene at Christmas – had they been planning to air the show in December? – with the return of the Holmes parents and their getting to show a little of who they really were as opposed to how their son(s) talked about them and thus the revelation that the boys got their brains from their mother, and didn’t really appreciate it, and their father’s heart. And Sherlock as a moppet! ‘Mike’ admitting he loves his brother – even if it was manipulation at some level – and giving Sherlock a tacit approval to get the newsman with him and everyone in a vice?! ‘Oh, Sherlock, what have you done?’ Er, what you gave him permission to. All that really, really got to me.

I liked the way that the episode picked up on things from the last two, like Janine (doubly used without knowing it) and all we didn’t know about Mary, not to mention clearing up who put John in the bonfire. A very creepy bad guy and more Mrs H revelations.

Really, really good.

I...have mixed feelings about Moriarty returning. I enjoyed the cameo in Sherlock’s head and I’ve always liked Andrew Scott’s gonzo take on the character. However, I'm not sure about having him come back from the dead too, especially when he was so convincingly dead. I need to be persuaded that’s a good idea story-wise, because you can’t resurrect all the characters all the time or what’s the point? (I read an interview where Moffat acknowledged that was a potential issue.) A good start on persuading me would be to explain how Moriarty seemed to fake his own death, because I think that’s a lesson the writing team could learn from this third season, even if the ratings have been huge, there definitely was a backlash about how Sherlock's return was handled. So, while my answer to ‘Miss Me?’ isn’t a hissing ‘no’, because I like Scott’s performance – my knickers are in no twist.

Very little Greg, sadly, although he had a golden moment. But the cleverness and the emotional aspects worked much better in this one – I know I haven’t gone on about Sherlock, John and Mary but that mostly worked beautifully – the point about John needing the excitement of the case so much that he went to rescue his neighbour like that was well made and that, at some level, he chose Mary because of what he really didn’t want to recognise about her. AND JOHN WORE THE COAT. They didn’t dwell on it, but it happened.

Of course, the game wasn’t over, silly boy.

Next post will be my thoughts about the last The Bletchley Circle episode.
