shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (POI Zoe and John at work)
[personal profile] shallowness
To recap, we had a pointless break from Person of Interest on five – isn’t season 3 airing in the US now, so I don't get why it was off for several months. I barely remember where we are in terms of the overall arc (specifically I don't remember who knows what).

2.10 Shadow Box

Bear belongs to both of you, guys. Which is to say that Reese and Finch were delightful in this. Writing that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t entirely on Carter’s side in her attempt to establish boundaries. But oh, John’s difficulty in explaining who he is and telling Finch he was happy (because he had a purpose).

The NOTW was ‘her off Rubicon’ – cue a second to remember the ponderousness that was Rubicon – and her accomplice was very good looking. And I did like that John outmuscled his protective instinct so that he and the NOTW could get their happy ending after playing Robin Hood of sorts.

I did think that the fact that three ex-military types were around too would save John, but I still gulped for Harold when it seemed like he was in danger.
I really should think of Donnelly as such and not ‘Orange guy’.

Basically – YAY it’s back and can it stay on all season, five? Not that I’ll watch it live, probably.

The Mentalist 6.14 Gray Water

Aargh, don’t end it there! Don’t you dare fridge her for Rigsby (RIGSBY!) to want to follow in Jane’s footsteps!

Is it because you can’t have three main female characters, show?

The beginning was bad enough – I thought they had a baby son together, not a daughter – until I realised Grace would have a gun on the gunman, and then I relaxed.

The case of the week was a bit rote, Jane was ignoring the rules, Fischer and Abbot were learning to go along with it and getting more integrated with the team, but what of that? They’d got Rigsby and Van Pelt to FBI HQ, specifically Cho and Rigsby were back together, which was a delight, Grace put young Wylie gently in his place...Granted, I didn’t think we needed a return to a shortlist of candidates – and I don’t think anyone considered that their guy could be acting in cahoots with someone.

But whoever the gunman was, he’d have unfinished business with Grace. Ugh.

Next week’s episode is on at 10 o’clock, apparently, which I hope is because five has football or somesuch rather than it being gory and fatal for Grace. I was enjoying the post Red John world and watching Jane and his newish team adjust in it.

Then I had a double-bill catching up on Nashville

2.7 She’s Got You

It always amuses me when they go out on tour and...aren’t in Nashville.
Oh, Avery, you can’t face Deacon? The angry-scared tactless dynamic between them made putting them together to work on music a fun idea – they even had a moment of connection over how they disappoint people (cough Scarlett). Truth is though, I’m more anti Scarlett/Avery because of wanting Avery/Juliette to happen than rooting for sweet Scarlett and currently very stupid and naive Gunnar. If you’d told me that during the first half of season 1, I wouldn’t have believed it.

“I’m not going to like what’s going to happen next, am I” <3 Glenn and Juliette.

Polo Mogul should have seen Juliette’s anger at him stepping in coming, or at least Juliette being contrary. The point about having to deal with leches was salient in the middle of her strop. I even loved her trying to be protective of the women who were coming up after her.

Slightly wiser than Will’s attempt to be a vigilante, coming from his own issues and typically brilliant coping mechanisms.

Speaking of, at least they gave more depth to Luke, Rayna’s latest admirer and rebound guy. In fact things tied together well by the end, from Deacon’s feelgood performance at the Bluebird to Gunnar coming onto Scarlett’s bus, until maybe a twist too far with Olivia?

2.8 Hanky Panky Woman

That mega previously suggests there was a break between airing this one and the last, even though a couple of scenes immediately picked up where we’d left off. Ah well, those are the weirdnessess of the American TV season. However, it was nice to have the Avery first sets eyes on Juliette/bumps into her for us.

I was really chuffed that Juliette came back home to do music with Avery, who was able to remind her he’s her friend.

While I got why Rayna did what she did with and for Scarlett, Scarlett didn’t know that and was pushed a bit too quickly. And while Rayna had good ‘get back on the horse’ advice after the horrible booing, she was trying to mother Scarlett, which isn’t a partnership either.

And then we had Scarlett and Gunnar singing and MAGIC. And then I feel protective of them both, getting used or about to be used by the more established stars/the industry.

Oh show, why did you have to make a thing of Juliette remembering first meeting Avery? It worked better when she didn’t. Still, her WISTFUL face at him answering Scarlett’s call.

Yay! She did kill it – and we haven’t seen that much sass from her before.

Oh, but at what cost? (Having her call her mama makes me hopeful we’ll finally meet her.)

The Good Wife

5.10 The Decision Tree

Hundredth episode!

And it still seems to be as good as ever. There was one outstanding scene for many, many reasons, but I enjoyed most of it. The opening image – why not go for blatant? And KALINDA! Of course chasing Damien at high speed. Silly man. Although once he was on to her, what did she think she was going to get out of him? Well, presumably she’ll get something out of the cop. But we have been lacking in Kalinda action this season, so yay.

I also loved that Damien was going to Alicia’s office on David Lee’s say-so, but Diane and Will didn’t know and that Alicia’s ‘undue influence’ was again because of David Lee. Nice circularity.

It occurred to me after the ‘You need to talk to me’ conversation with Cary that Alicia and Diane need to sit down and talk about partnering with Cary & Will. They’re not there yet, but it would be cool if they were.

And in the background, the party becoming more of a thing, with the war of the mothers continuing. LOVED Zach’s line about Alicia sometimes being his mother and sometimes an interesting person he shares a roof with. It’s just something that all kids realise about their parents at some point and, well, true in her case.

I’d been spoiled for the will in Alicia’s favour thing leading to her facing Lockhart Gardner in court, and desperately hoped for it to be Matthew Anspaugh, because one could argue that they underused John Noble the last time he was on. The music added something to the flashbacks and speaking of flashbacks, oh, if they stinted on showing us Alicia/Will onscreen when they were in a relationship, they’re now perfectly aware that it’s a trump card to return to. Will’s response to Anspaugh because of his feelings for Alicia and the effect of their memories on both of them was great.

Also Hayden got to be useful in court. YAY!

But the outstanding scene had to be the prep scene for many reasongs: the fact that we saw Will’s prep technique. The way it played on the writers coming up with a scene, only we got to see it acted out by the actors. The fact that Will knew Alicia well enough to guess her answers (except he didn’t, partly because he didn’t know everything about what had happened, but he thought she’d wear white, she chose black, and he hates it when she’s weak, and she was strong). And just the fact that he was questioning her about one relationship but mainly meant another – I loved how that carried over to the actual questioning, but in a different style. Josh Charles was amazing here. Like Alicia said, Will is angry, because he’s hurt. I was wondering what exactly would come out in court, Diane and Cary don’t know the full extent, but they must suspect...

As for the ending, beyond the cheap gag, what is Marilyn thinking? If that was seriously a way into Marilyn/Peter, well, it was cheap. I tend to think that her hormones were playing up because what professional woman would use that music thing when she was carrying out her job? I know it was meant to link in with Anspaugh – but they explicitly brought up the fact that he was pretending to be mentally ill, whereas what is going on with her?

Agents of SHIELD 1.14 Old Friend

So, I still don’t care about Skye – but I got annoyed at Coulson not pausing to think about what he was apparently willing to do to save her or remembering his feelings about what he remembered he’d gone through. At least eventually the others started questioning him. By the time he wanted to put the brakes on using the dodgy liquid, I was rolling my eyes at him.

So Tahiti is T.A.H.I.T.I.. Was that a frost giant? Alien, anyway.

I did enjoy May taking it out on Quinn at some level too. But there was a bit too much machismo between Bill Paxton’s character and Coulson and Ward and Trip. (And yes, Simmons is adorable, but he seemed a bit too taken too quickly.) There was a lot of liking one thing but not liking another about this episode, and overall, I was pretty detached.

I spent most of this episode hooting ‘Age of Miracles, baby’ at the screen. So, is the Clairvoyant Zola’s algorithm? If so, Coulson’s resuscitation was all on Fury. By the way, in the scene where everyone watched him ‘die’ a shadowy figure in a suit joined Steve, Natasha and Maria – I wondered if it was (or was meant to be) Phil.

[In my defence, that's 3-days-worth of posting.]
