Person of Interest double-bill

The double-billing is because of five, not me, for once. By the time I post this, I'll be behind again, because I'll be watching The Good Wife live instead.

Okay, I was always going to enjoy an episode featuring Zoe, even if she was underused, but, once again, we’re reminded that she knows pretty much what John and Harold are up to and is excellent at tipping wine all over someone. Silly John, trying to domesticate her a little. I also enjoyed Mia Maestro playing the NOTW. The closed nature of the hotel worked quite well – of course Finch decided to buy it and run it properly.
Hmm, given the affinity, does he live in a hotel?
Alas, poor Carter. I did think she hadn’t thought through what being an FBI agent would mean – to her life as much as the mission, but anyway, it looks as if Cal, not Reese and Finch, has scuppered that. I’m blaming Five’s odd scheduling decision to have a massive break in the middle of airing the second season, although it’s also that I don’t care enough about Cal, that I’m not sure whether he is guilty and worth investigating or being set up by HR/Lionel.
Vicious little fight between two executors in the kitchen, but John got to take the high road out of there.
Still, let’s not get too carried away. The most exciting moment really was discovering that Mr Office of Special Counsel’s capable Miss May was Root.
So that was a decent and entertaining enough episode but then BOOM.

I got exceptionally excited from the very beginning as we broke off from the normal voice over and credits and the Machine found something to follow.
Hello, Shaw! I had heard of a Shaw coming up on the show and so far, I am very happy to make her capable acquaintance. She does defenestration, self-surgery and multi-tasking. EEE!
Her tech back-up, who looked familiar, had good banter, I assumed by the end of their first mission that he was half in love with her (your hero, aww, yep), and all the talk of control and numbers was fascinating, but it quickly became apparent that they were running down a different type of number, the number of evil-doers, and the technique made it clear that it was the Machine at work. Which was all FASCINATING even if an agent being burned by her handlers and then fleeing for her life is well-worn (apart from the gender of the agent, maybe).
POI sure knows when to veer off in a new and utterly intriguing direction...
Because I massively enjoyed seeing glimpses of Team Machine and for the NOTW to be the protagonist. Well, Shaw was pretty capable at it, even given who was coming after her and learning about how Northern Lights worked was a great story, plus we know Team Machine’s MO well enough to fill in the gaps, almost.
We got to see all of the core team (I include Bear) and Leon (heh).
I’ve long thought John’s introductory speech to the NOTW could do with some polishing. Even more so after this.
Of course The Guy would have picked and trained Shaw.
And then, there was Root, doing her own thing.
So, even if Shaw is rejecting Team Machine’s help for now, they obviously have to meet up again so that Finch and Reese can catch up a little with what the audience knows about Root. And Root and Shaw have unfinished business...
And she’s awesome and another fascinating element in this story the show’s telling.
In other news, for the first time in a while, I can watch DVDs on my big TV. The reason why I couldn't is all my own fail, but I'm really excited, although my DVD watching has also gone down of late because there's so much TV to catch up with, because scheduling is not my friend.
