shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Avengers Natasha/Bruce)

1.19 The Only Light in the Darkness

Not half bad at all, I liked the montage of interviews and what they showed about the characters. EXCELLENT deployment of the name 'Mary-Sue'. Admitting the problem is the first step (Skye made me laugh at least once, Ward using her made me feel a teeny bit sorry for her and then she was legitimately smart and pulled it together when she realised what Ward had done. If the show can restrain itself from pointing this out, she may grow to be tolerable.)

Did we know Tripp was a legacy/related to a Howling Commando? I suppose other, more attentive people did. I like that he’s shown to be science smart (er, smarter than May and Ward) for Simmons’s sake after the almost cartoonish introduction. And I really liked that he, at least, picked the weapon back up.

Just as I was internally snarking at Coulson going straight for the baddie we’d seen in the opening scene, they gave him a big old personal reason for it. Ditto the clichéd baddie liking classical music having a character-based reason.

Dear Simmons, claiming you’re from the CIA with an English accent is probably not your brightest idea, although it feeds into the whole inability to lie.

After getting advice from his male peers, I didn’t mind that Fitz folded. Well, he’s only barely admitting his feelings for Jenna, and I think she’d have patted his head like a puppy had she known how he felt.

Amusing that Leo said ‘that’s the real Ward’ when maybe the real Ward popped up. I suppose I was meant to spend the whole episode wondering how much of the truth he was using in his lies, but I was mainly judging his tradecraft – oldschool penny, good, not washing up after the killing, bad.

Coulson is SUCH a boy scout, although I think he was bordering on stalky behaviour by not telling Audrey Nathan (Haven shout-out? Or legitimate comics name?) he was still alive. Acker did her stuff, which didn’t include much cello playing, obviously :)

Anyway, yes, Coulson, you’ve been mean to May and need to apologise, especially if you’re not being angry with anyone else – and when you realise Fury faked his own death, he may not have been the one who was experimenting on the prisoners. Of course, he may well have been and Coulson will have to face up to the fact that SHIELD isn’t what he thought it was and they’ll change the name of the show...

Speaking of, she should have said goodbye to Skye too, there was no good reason for that, unless if she later says it was because she was afraid Skye would have made her change her mind (although if they go there, we'll be back to Skye annyoing me. Was that May's awesome mother? And I want to know why the Anglo names around the Chinese name. And Melinda May going to ask questions of Maria Hill after everything? Yes please. That works much better than all the references to the Avengers.

But sweeping up all the escaped superpowered prisoners is a mission for the team, definitely.

I saw that the show has been renewed for a second season. Frankly, I was hoping it would be cancelled, because I was leaning towards giving it up after this season. But then, this episode was good enough that I would say that there was much less snark involved in my enjoyment of it that usual.

In other news, the new X-Men film is soon upon us and my grand plans to rewatch most of the movies hasn't happened. In between now and then, I've got RL commitments, catching up on TV and watching other films to cram in. Er, we'll see.
