Three hundred years ago, approximately, helsinkibaby gave me John/Aeryn (Farscape), Lisbon/Jane (The Mentalist) and Wallace/Mac (Veronica Mars)
John/Aeryn (Farscape) – I rewatched the first episode of Farscape recently and obsessed about John and Aeryn’s first meeting here. John/Aeryn are one of my ultimate OTPs, basically.
Aeryn Sun is a soldier, has trained to be one all her life and then the system that she gave so much to spat her out and called her contaminated, tainted – and she was, by John Crichton, a human astronaut, a scientist whose experiment led him through a wormhole out into the crazy vastness. At first the contamination was compassion, then it was other feelings.
Aeryn is an onion. There are layers and layers there that we and the show discover (and in doing so, there will be tears) but which, instinctively, John grasps – he tells her ‘You can be more’ even in that first episode. And she is, she is so much more, so much more than he imagined, and she is heartbreaking, heartbroken. To list what these two went through in the show – madness, so much near death, actual death, angst, angst, angst, psychedelic adventures, snatched happy endings - very few other pairings compare.
I know that it gets pretty epic the longer the show goes on, but what’s interesting is how the show plays with the UST and turns it into RST quite quickly, but then takes its time over all the feelings. It’s clear that this is a show OTP, which is how I like to think of canonical pairings that you know are endgame, but the show likes to break them almost beyond repair. For me, it helps that this is in space and they’re so pretty (and there’s chemistry, so much so) because I normally couldn’t stomach all this angst. Except there’s also wacky Loony Tunes comedy.
Ahem. That barely scratches the surface of John/Aeryn.
With Farscape, I’m mostly happy with canon. I haven’t sought fic for these two or the show (fanart and fanvids are another matter). Perhaps if we hadn’t had the mini-series, I might have caved. As it is, I would still love to see what had happened next to John and Aeryn – I would expect there to be craziness – in a sequel. If the one there have been rumours about happens.
Lisbon/Jane
I don’t want to get into too much spoilery detail, so this will be vaguer and shorter.
I should have given this pairing up with disgust and wished for a healthier outcome for Teresa Lisbon. But it’s the playfulness between Jane and Lisbon that still gets to me and, by this point, my main argument is that she’s invested so much in keeping this man sane(ish) and engaged with the world that she's closed off other personal options, so I want it to work out. (I've always felt that Lisbon is more my OTC than that Jane/Lisbon is my OTP.) In response, Patrick Jane has, probably, opened up to her more than most, even if he’s held back from committing to a romantic relationship and used and manipulated her and her feelings for him for his mission. More than once, he’s with-held or kept her at a remove beyond what her friendship and loyalty have deserved. And yet, he does know at some level that she’s the most important person in his life.
Despite the way that his being a mentalist and her being the straight arrow (when he’s not influencing her) twists it, it is an m/f take on the partners type of ship. And though the PTB have seemed to be undecided about whether they want to keep it platonic or not over the years, his relationship with Lisbon is the most important relationship that Jane has with a living soul.
I’m behind on fic, as in I’m still reading fic set during season 2, but I am aware that the volume dropped off as the series went on. I think my ideal fic would be something that was credible for the characters, slow-burn (I have such a yen for well-paced slow-burn fics that time the getting together right), diverging from the show before its huge mis-step. (The takeback at the start of season 4.) Though, also, I am interested in what is happening with the characters on the show now.
Wallace/Mac
This is because of the movie.
It just occurred to me while watching the movie that it was plausible, given how very comfortable Wallace and Mac were with each other after all these years, that they had hooked up, enjoyed it and decided, for whatever reason, not to carry on hooking up. I don’t think it ever got more serious than that or Veronica would have known and it would have been a more notable thing in the film.
I hadn’t looked for fic until doing this meme, and there really isn't much. Sometimes, I do see uncanonical pairings that few others do. Except in this instance, helsinkibaby did too. I’d like to see fic that does tell the story of how they hooked up at some point after Hearst, although because my vision for them is happy – especially Mac, I want her to have a happy, functional relationship because of Cassidy – there’s little tension there, so it would be really fluffy. Maybe some sort of five times fic that danced between friends and friends with benefits without getting angsty.
OR, maybe there could be post-movie fic where there’s a case and the fact that they did hook up is pertinent to it somehow. Then there’d be flashbacks to that one time, well, two or three, when they hooked up. I’d like to read a story where Veronica didn’t realise this had happened and finds out, because what would her reaction be to how it affected their dynamic(s) as friends? But then it’s Veronica, wouldn’t she have figured it out and just mock them? Um, basically, I can’t decide whether Veronica should know. I could be convinced either way.
Anyway, in this fic/these fics, revisiting would probably lead to rekindling.
