Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD 1.21 Ragtag
No very strong feelings about this ep. I suppose they had to give us the Ward and Garrett relationship origin story – the most interesting bit of which was that Garrett was the first Deathlok and how that affected his motivations now. But I was more interested in how Raina was taking her disillusionment in the Clairvoyant, plus what she meant about her being like Skye. (Apparently the big secret about Skye’s origins wasn’t that big a secret. I know, it was probably for plot so that Ward knows, but still.)
And while I get that they wanted someone to still believe in Ward – the analogy with Buddy was laboured – I thought Simmons was a little too sidelined by Fitz’s denial, while May and Skye’s issues with Ward are far more interesting. And Coulson vs. Garrett too.
Coulson geeking out over old Howling Comando toys, I mean tools, was more fun than Coulson and May playing Fitzsimmons. Much less successful than Skye channelling May a while back. Although the pay-off of their being able to handle the guy in the lift and zipping out of the building worked.
In fairness to Brett Dalton, I liked his portrayal of the younger Ward. I think they could have cast someone who looked more like him as younger still Ward.
And we ended on some ‘cliffhangers’ – the Centipeded supersoldiers are more of a threat and more interesting plot-wise, because as Quinn made his salespitch to the two soldiers (the white one was a total hey, it’s that guy) I kept thinking about WarMachine. But I’m fairly sure they’ll all make it through to fight the bigger bads in, huh, is it the final episode?
(I've started the X-Men rewatch. I'm going to go X-Men, X2, X-Men 3, The Wolverine, X-Men First Class and avoiding Wolverine: Origins. X-Men was mainly about nostalgia about fannish reactions to it as much as the film itstelf and making me curious about how they're going to pull it all together in Days of Furture Past. Oh, and seeing how the film compates with modern day superhero movies, which it helped influence.)
