I blame the chocolate

Only now do I notice that Root is actually the third character who’s identified by the Machine in the new credits for season 3. (And that's all we saw of her in this episode.)
The saving grace for much of this episode for me was Shaw’s induction into the ways of Team Machine, with Finch being worried about Shaw’s penchant for shooting stuff, just enough and just loudly enough that she could wind him up about it. I enjoyed the needling/tension between them. Meanwhile, Reese could act all superior as she tried to find out more about Harold, like he hasn’t been working on that himself for a couple of years. And ‘rookie’ Shaw was mainly stuck being the eyes, a step away from the action – and with Reese playing back-up.
Er, as for the line about Reese needing to look pretty for the party, when has he not, Shaw?
But yeah, for most of the episode, the Number of the Week’s line of work was a bit too much on the nose, as someone harvesting online data for profit, claiming that no-one could have anything to hide about what they’d put online ‘knowingly’, and, of course, having all those secrets as blackmail material for some Anonymous who I presumed had been LifeTraced.
Then the more we got to see of him, the more repugnant he was - allowing Finch to get on his moral high horse, as the NotW was motivated by greed and thus blind to the human cost of his company.
I had wondered about Collier being behind it, but in a wondering about anyone we’d seen way, but his speech about being one of many and this being the first lesson was typical POI setting up new players for the rest of the season.
Aargh, Carter’s obsession...meet the Head of HR – the godfather who was to blame for your boyfriend’s death. Meanwhile, Lionel is a soft touch for her, while she was directing her frustration at her demotion, unfairly, towards her rookie partner. Poor boy, I thought, until he stood up form himself (will he stay around to have a plotline that shadows Shaw’s with Finch and Reese as mentors in their way of helping people?)
Er, Bear, I expected more of you than just slowing the NotW down. Why do you think Finch gives you these snacks?
So a typical episode in that the case was being carried by the dynamics between the regulars (which is entertaining enough for me) until WHAM! the show throws us something unexpected and promising. (Setting aside being reminded of Carter’s mission.)
I was about to say that I'm one behind, but I'm not, because it's Monday. It is Monday, right? So the next epiosde will air tonight. (And I caught up with this episode on Saturday night, then.) Holiday time oprates differently to normal time.
