shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)
[personal profile] shallowness
I was going to say that I come to you as a writer of PG-rated fluffy ficlets, often in obscure fandoms, who can sometimes stretch herself, and what follows will probably bear that out, but I'd forgotten that I'd written Magnetic North this year. This futurefic - Kira didn’t Push everything out of Nick’s mind. Cassie starts seeing him beside her in her visions again. - was definitely my most well-received fic over the year and I'm pretty happy with it. It passes the 2,000 word mark, which is a pretty decent length for me (I think the first fic I posted is probably still the longest.) I have a weakness for amnesia fics and I wanted to explore some of the darker aspects of Kira's character, plus there's my yen for Cassie and Nick, though I still dance around writing Cassie/Nick.

It felt as if this came after a run of Push fics, although I see that that isn't borne out by what I posted. But I had been writing lots of the beginnings of Push fics and realised that I wasn't done with Sky High, so I poked around a few Sky High fics, although that hasn't amounted to much.

I then posted a run of, well, PG-rated ficlets. Not all were fluffy! Layla's wedding is how I imagined Layla's wedding would be, and was partly inspired by preparation for nuptials in the family. From the same period is It had to be dolphins, which is more light-hearted, total Warren/Layla fluff.

Watching Ondine on DVD inspired Family Business, which is a post-canon look at how Ondine (I never quite caught what her other name was) settles down with Syracuse and Annie. Nearly all the feedback that I've got on this fic has commented on how there is no other fic for this film. (See, obscure.) The film is worth watching with magic realism elements rooted in folklore; it's beautifully photographed with loveable characters.

I then rewatched Step Up 2: The Streets and, like the first time I saw the film, although my head agreed that Andie and Chase made a good match, my heart was sorely frustrated that the film let the Andie/Blake (or Blake/Andie, at least) subtext drop. This time, I read and wrote fic. Balance is a Blake-centric vignette in which he's watching a happy Chase and Andie, while We talked in silences and other ways is more of an exploration of how Andie feels about the attraction between her and Blake. I have written rough drafts of other Step Up 2 fic that is either too embarassing to post (I identify with Blake enormously) or which covers stuff that also appears in 'Silences'.

A lean period followed until a fluff meme arrived at the right time and got me writing Downton Abbey fic What's in a name, a Sybil-centric Sybil/Branson babyficlet, which canon hasn't quite jossed yet. Shorter than everything else I'd posted last year, I hoped it would spark off more writing, but it took the three-sentence ficathon to do that. My fills were: Swallows and Amazons, Titty, dreaming of summer and Push, Nick&Cassie, is a little r&r too much to ask?. (My answer in the latter question was 'no'. It did occur to me later that the answer the prompter was hoping for was 'yes'.) I loved reading and participating in that ficathon and it re-energised me into doing a little more writing and editing during a busy time.

I wrote True Colors, a Sky High Christmas fic about the gang hanging out at Ethan's fancy dress Christmas party. It's fluffy, so there's Zach and Magenta being awkward teenagers in lurve and Layla chivvying Warren and them both having fun. The response was a little disappointing, setting aside my neuroses about the quality of the fic, I suppose I ended up posting it too close to Christmas (and Yuletide). However, I remember the Zach and Will stuff making me feel all gleeful during the final readthrough, and no-one can take that away from me.

I refuse to put pressure on myself with resolutions for this year and will only say that it'd be nice to produce more (more ficlets or to complete longer fic). I wrote in four completely new fandoms and happily splashed around in Sky High fandom last year. I do have a tendency to write fluff, and maybe it is comfort writing, but I actively seek it out at a reader, so why not? I enjoyed writing the comedy in True Colors, so I'd like to do more of that. I don't think I'm done with Push, but I have no idea what 2012 will bring fic-wise (actually, it'll be nothing for at least the next few weeks).
